Can I install an aftermarket head unit and keep OEM speakers?

Hi Guys,

After my craptastic head unit died yet again, this time after warranty, I want to install an aftermarket one. I was wondering if I can just plug the OEM speakers into it, or do I need new speakers as well? I can't find specs on the OEM non-Bose system anywhere. I'm planning on getting a Pioneer Avic-Z2.

Thanks.

I'm not positive on the non-bose, but you should be able to hook the headunit up to the stock amp

I just installed an aftermarket unit on my non-bose sedan and let me tell you, aftermarket unit makes stock speakers sound 100 times better.
If you are going to do install yourself just make sure you get the Nissan wire harness. It makes life very easy. Just solder color matched wires together and plug it into the car. If you need any help or have any questions, feel free to pm me.

Yes you can, I did it for a friend a while back. A standard nissan adapter harness will give you all your speaker wires to tap into.

The non-Bose amp is in the OEM head unit, so, as others have said, get the two Nissan wire harness adapters and it's easy to power the stock 4 ohm Clarion speakers with any aftermarket HU.

You will also need the JDM DD trim piece, AC controller, Nissan antenna adapter, and a PAC SWI-PS to use the steering wheel controls.

It would be a good idea to replace the stock speakers with some good ones though. The stock speakers aren't anything to brag about, either the Bose or non-Bose.

Thanks for the advice guys. I will be doing this myself, since I enjoy working on the car, but I've never done electrical stuff before. I'm sure that I'll have questions. I'll take pictures along the way and I'll post a detailed how-to with photos when I'm done. It looks like I have quite a lot of rewiring to do in order to get the iPod adapter, PAC-SWI, Avic-z2 bypass, and all that good stuff working together.
