Question Reguarding Issue With JL W6 Subwoofer

Thing is would turning up the volume too high actually rip the whole rubber surround all the way around? Right after I heard a difference, I took out the whole box and sub.

I was wondering what everyone's take is on replacing the rubber/foam surround? I was thinking of ordering a kit and trying it out. Good idea or bad idea?
