4080 subwoof box - plus what else?

I'm going to spring for 4080s subwoof box with the hole for 10" driver. Per 4080's advice, and me not wanting to replace the stock head unit or amp, my thinking has me only replacing the door speakers - and the subwoofer amplifier and driver.

The car is a 2005 6MT with the premium package including the Bose stereo.

So here are the questions I have fo the group, especially those who have installed the 4080 box. I live in the Chicagoland western suburbs and will most likely use Tweeter (a chain store) for my install, unless someone else has experience with a custom installer out here.

*I saw a lot of posts about the M&L 10" driver and amp, which seems popular on this forum. Any other favorite combinations? How much wattage for the Infiniti cottage?

*I plan to use the line outs from the stock bose amp (keeping the rest of the speakers full range) to the subwoofer amp, and set the crossover around 100 hz (per 4080s instructions).

*Is there an alternative? Does the stock Bose amp have a non-proprietary line in? In other words, is there a connector between the head unit and Bose amp that can have a crossover filter inserted (say at 100 hz), so that the speakers in the cabin no longer function as full range? The connector would need to be a "Y" design, with the line in from head unit being split two ways - one way is the 100hz and up signal (via a filter) to the stock Bose amp powering the cabin speakers, the other is a full range signal to tha subwoofer amp (which would have its own filter for 100 hz and below) that drives the woofer in the 4080 box. Is this more trouble than it is worth?

*Regardless of which scenario is used for the subwoofer, I'd like to replace the door speakers. I saw a couple threads on depth issues with some speakers some of you tried to install? Can anyone recommend a pair that fits, that are a substantial improvement over the stock drivers?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

4080 was very helpful. I'm going with his box.

Based on my need for a simple install, I'm going with the JL10W6V2, and JL500/1. The speaker signal to low level RCA converter part is PAC SNI-15.

This will work with the stock head unit and speakers.

For additional performance without too much more work, the door speakers can be replaced with JLXR650CSI which is a 6.5" driver and 1" tweeter.

I have not decided on the door speakers or not, will get quote fom Tweeter (installer & chain store) for that and decide then.

This data came from 4080, and is as far as I plan to go. I dug through the archives for a few hours, and there is lots of data out there - but not much more in terms of answers if you are looking to use the stock head unit and Bose amp.

John,

Your set-up, how much will that cost approximately including installation and the 4080 box? Thanks.

different config now

I'm getting it installed Monday - will post results then - but:

I went back to Tweeter and spoke with the install guy, here is what the parts list looks like.

Jl250/1 amp (down from the 500, which I decided was too big and expensive) at $400.

JL 10W3V24D driver $200. (less power handling than other JL 10")

Power wires, speaker wire, RCA cabling $150.

Various dynamat kits $50.

MB Quart front door speakers, $350 (floor model, was $550)

Installation $300 (plus minus $100 depending on time)

Will post results later next week

you should consider adding an amplifier to power your MB Quart mids & highs.

bsaic amp etc

Yeah - I know - but where to stop? I gues I could do the bose amp replacement later, with some more spaeker replacements. I set out to spend a quik $1K. The 4080 box was around $350 shipped, the components ran about $1200, and the install is going to be be a few hundred. Just for a subwoofer and door speakers it is close to a $2K endeavor.

I had no idea car stereo could be so expensive - I'm an old man - and have not screwed around with this stuff since the mid 80's when Jensen triax was as hot **** as you could get. This is my first new car since a 1985 RX7 (I've had 15 consecutive company cars yearly before switching jobs) so I'm still in sticker shock just from the car - let a lone finding out a decent stero with sub could run anothe $3-6K.

I know good sound, have B&W, Adcom, etc at home. I bought the 6MT without even listening to the stereo. It almost as good as wife's 5 year lod A6 wagon, just barely better than Ford Taurus unit.
I'm really surprised how bad it is for $36K car.

Don't feel bad. I thought I'd be happy with my G35c 6MT and thought I spoiled myself with the "Premium Package." Here I am a year and a half later trying to modify my sound system. Although there is the fear of going "overboard," I look at sound quality in my car as an investment that I, and the people who are in it, can all enjoy. In that sense I justify this investment as having practical value as opposed to dropping several thousands of dollars to replace an already excellent set of wheels.
