Question for those of you who have done your own double din installs

Hi Guys,

I've finally received my JDM double din conversion and Kenwood DNX5120, and I'll be doing the install tomorrow. I haven't taken my dash apart yet, but I was wondering if there is any leeway with how deep double din units mount. It looks like by default, the DNX5120 will stick out about half an inch from the dash, like this:

This is disgusting.

What I would like to do is slide the head unit back a little bit and have it close to flush mounted. If I do manage to do this, it looks like there will still be a wide gap around the face plate of the head unit. It comes with a hard plastic bezel that would be very hard to cut down to fit, but maybe I can sand it down. Have any of you successfully installed a double din stereo that's not explicitly designed for flush mounting flush with the dash?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I didn't use any plastic mount when I install mine. It does have a small gap but no big deal so I left it the way it is. I found that little gap pretty helpful on cooling my unit off.

There is enough room to compensate for the depth. I think you may need to modify the holes in the bracket so they align with the HU to get the depth you want. The trim ring on my D3 was trimmed a couple of times to get the right fit.
