Re: XM/Sirius owners- POLL

I tried to submit my results twice but could only do one.

I have the factory XM on my G35 Coupe through the sat button. That sounds better than radio but not as good as CD. Maybe the source is compressed for satellite transmission so you end up with something similar to MP3 vs true audio CD quality.

I have a XM Roady with tape adapter for my 97 E320. I used that once in my coupe for comparison to my factory XM. the XM Roady-tape adaptor sounds similar to FM radio when I am getting a good FM signal. The FM signal are not great with all the hills in the SF bay area, one reason for me to get XM in the first place. My understanding is that sound quality from FM modulation is worse than tape adaptor.

My suggestion is to go with the factory sat if you are only using it in the G. Otherwise use something like XM Roady with tape adaptor if you are moving it among several vehicles. I like using the XM roady on my home system with the home adaptor kit.

I have XM but not in my G??? Are you asking it the G only?

Re: XM/Sirius owners- POLL

The most appropriate responses would be for the G, considering that's the car's system we're discussing

Feel free to post other experiences, though!

Okay NOW I wasn't sure it you wanted to know about the quality people are having with XM, or XM in our G!

Re: XM/Sirius owners- POLL

I have to agree with the Doc. As I mentioned in a different thread, there is no static like FM but the depth and fullness of sound is not there. I'm sure it's due to the bandwidth limitations.

Re: XM/Sirius owners- POLL

This poll confirms my suspicions. A high percentage of people just don't hear audio compression artifacts. I really envy you guys that think XM sounds like a CD. I don't consider myself an audio purist. Unfortunately to my ears, both XM and Sirius very obviously mangle the sound quality. There's no way I could ever call it "CD quality" or even "near CD quality". Like a CD, it lacks noise, but that's where the similarities stop. Something like a crisp hi-hat or a nice distortion guitar ends up sounding like it's under water. The dynamic range just isn't there, either.

Re: XM/Sirius owners- POLL

The form of AAC compression that XM uses creates its own high-range frequency information. That is it tosses all data above 12kHz and then tries to recreate it by itself (based on the frequencies below it) to save space. Needless to say, this makes many things sound awful (like hi-hats).

Re: XM/Sirius owners- POLL

Hmm, was thinking about getting XM, but now I am less than sure. My initial hurdle was paying for radio... I was under the impression that sound quality would be better than radio, but I guess not.
More though needed

Re: XM/Sirius owners- POLL

Well, the majority of people with the factory XM find it close to CD quality, and the second largest group find it better than radio, at least. The variety and control enough is worth it-- don't let single bad experienced deter you. Good luck,

G

Re: XM/Sirius owners- POLL

I have XM in two vehicles, and while the sound is better than FM, the factory unit in my G35 Coup has the defect talked about here in other posts, that causes it to gratuitously shut down from time to time, giving it bad marks overall, as I have to turn the ignition off to get the signal back. Most of what I listen to is talky stuff anyway, so the frequency range and sound quality is secondary, but the shows are only available from sat, so I give it high marks on content.

The Boise sound was so pathetic before I started changing things it did not matter what the source was anyway.

Re: XM/Sirius owners- POLL

i have xm in my g coupe and my mom has sirius in her g35x... i dont have my connected just because i listen to cd's all the time and know that i wouldnt listen to the radio, s i never activated mine after i got the car. MY mom listens to hers all the time tho and loves it. I dont like the radio because its about 40% music and 60% other crap that no one wants to hear, but i guess if u like a wide range of music and artists, sirius is 100% music all the time. I didnt realize how people were grading and voted before i read others responses. It is DEFINATLY a LOT better than radio quality (at least where i live... my community is called "The Woodlands, tx" and thats because there are 150ft pine trees everywhere and it looks like forest. It is actually illegal to cut down trees thicker than 3 inches in diameter in my community and people building pools, houses, and just clearing out their bakc yards have to pay abbout 200 dollar fines for each tree they cut down in their own yards... so radio reception goes in and out i guess is what im getting at lol). I know its not cd quality, but i listen to burned cd's mostly anyways and those arent TRUELY cd quality either, so i guess its whatever u can live with and how much of a musical purist you are. I myself play a classical instrument and have a very refined ear for sound/music in general so i know when im listing to something that's clear or when im listening to something thats muffled.... its just whether u can put up with it or not. I also use stock bose.... so i guess u can see that im not as into sound as some of the other guys on the foum

2004 Black on Black g coupe 6spd.... aluminum pedals, clear corners, z tube, and pop charger. soon to have 19" volk gt-c's and PIAA xtreme whites in the clearance and corners

Re: XM/Sirius owners- POLL

I have not gotten my 2005 G35 coupe yet. However, I did have the XM commander connected (via adapter module) to the stock head unit in my 2003 Acura CL-S. Now, I am extremly picky about my music. I never adopted Mp3 because despite the fact the songs were free I could not stand to listen to mush-mush-mud music. I found the XM in my Acura to be very good. At least CD quality. I believe we have not seen the end of it either. It would not suprise me if XM eventualy began to broadcast in 5.1 surround (DD or DTS, pick one). If that happens, then you've really got something. Until then, if you want the best, write the car makers and tell them to install DVD audio or SACD in their cars.
