Highly recommend the Valentine 1

My front detector also pretty much sits on the dash.
I'm looking at getting a fully integrated setup on another car... I've seen them in action and they'll put any dash/windshield mounted detector to shame. (although at about 4-5x the cost inc. installation)
I have my V1 about 3 months now and loving it so far. The V1 connected with the stealtcord which is plugged into the rear view mirror power source and the setup is seamless. Here is the link for setup pics for my g35.

Also the v1 is 400 plus shipping I used to be a distributor for escort so I kinda favor escort since the price is right for me. the v1 just needs an upgrade, it hasnt been upgraded in years except for pop mode
I do have to agree that the arrows are pretty useless... Think about it. The detector module is in the front, so if the side goes off, you're already screwed =P

I've had Passports (7500 sucked, 8500 was pretty good), and the V1 is at least as sensitive plus the arrows, plus ability to program, plus in-chassis upgrades.
I downplay the rear antenna, because if you look at it, the rear radar antenna can only pick up so much. Look at the line of sight on the rear antenna. It has... the space between your seats available, with the rear windshield deflecting a lot of the radar away from the antenna.
V1's front/back capability is good for a single detector; it's the only one on the market. It's no match for having 2 actual detectors.

I still have an 8500 too. No tickets the whole time I've had it, so it must be good enough. However if you look at the test results it is a good ways behind the tier 1 detectors. I guess it depends on how safe you want to be
