Anyone mount their amps on the trunklid?

Anyone have pix of their amps mounted on the underside of the trunklid? I have 2 JL Audio amps and I'm looking for the best way to save space in the trunk and would like to avoid mounting them on the back of the rear seats.

Would the added weight of the amps affect the hydraulic trunk lifter?

That probably wouldn't work out very well since when the trunk is opened, you'd need some type of rubber-band wire extensions if you wanted your wires to retract instead of dangle in the trunk. Me personally, I'd never mound them to the trunk. In the unlikely event you get in a wreck from behind (also), the trunk is the most damaged piece of equipment besides the bumper. If it's mounted on the inside, your amps will sustain less damage should you get in a wreck too. Either use the seat or put one amp in each of the back corners of the trunk if those spots aren't used.

Good luck...

Re: Anyone mount their amps on the trunklid?

Not to sound crazy, but if someone just rear-ended me I wouldn't care about the amps.

The main problem with this is the wires. The installed (watertight) electrical flex-tube is not large enough for amp power wires. I am sure it could be modified...but it would never be quite right.

Just my $0.02.

You'd care about your amps if you paid good money for them.... once you knew everyone else was ok. But yeah - barring an accident, the wiring is the hardest part to figure. You'd have to have some slack in the wire somewhere for when the trunk is opened. No biggie... Later.

Beyond the wiring and accidents concerns, wouldn't heat be a major concern considering heat rises? If you have them mounted to the trunk lid, the amps wouldn't cool properly because the heat being dissipated would rise, thus going right back into them. Just my .02

Re: Anyone mount their amps on the trunklid?

Being in an enclosed area (trunk), it wouldn't really matter. The trunk is hot on bottom and top.... but now that I think about it, the main heat would probably be from the trunk top being baked by the sun - not the heat rising inside of the trunk. I don't guess I'd worry about it too much.... I'd just find another place to mount it - say underneath the inside top of the trunk (where the light is located). That would work.......... You'd also care about your amps if you double-checked your auto insurance policy. Even if someone else rear-ends you and it's their fault, you're likely looking at getting the car fixed and getting a max of about $1500 for aftermarket stereo equipment. Might want to talk to your agent and ask about that one. Some of ya'll spend more than that on one component.

Re: Anyone mount their amps on the trunklid?

Never ever ever ever mount your amps upside down unless you have some sort of active cooling (fans) or else they will die really fast from too much overheating. Yea it might get hot everywhere in the trunk, but the amp will stay within operating temperatures because of the heatsink. Heat rises, so if the amp is upside down, heat will only come back and saturate the amp, causing either damage to your amp or frequent shut-offs from the protection mechanism. If someone tells you it's ok to mount them upside down without active cooling, ask them to pass the pipe, cuz they're smoking some crazy stuff.

Re: Anyone mount their amps on the trunklid?

Haha I guess I should read more thoroughly through the posts to see if it was already answered. I guess i just felt a wave of panic/fear when I read that someone was thinking about mounting amps upside down. Sorry ekaz lol.

Ryoken is correct. Most insurance policies will pay to restore the car to its original condition. You should always check with your Independent Insurance Agent when making a big dollar investment into your car to make sure you are covered properly.

Re: Anyone mount their amps on the trunklid?

I would entirely disagree. With most amps you would never want to mount them upside down without a cooling fan. I own a JL 300/4 and JL 250/1. I even called JL and spoke with their techs. For these amps due to their design an upside down mount is acceptable.
