2004 G35x Sedan Double DIN Inquiries...And Yeah, I Searched
Firstly, thanks in advance to all who decide to contribute to this thread. I realize the frustration that you all must face with new threads about questions you already feel you've answered, however I would ask you to take each question as a compliment. Most new owners (like myself) consider you all G-Wizards and only ask questions because you've demonstrated competence and intelligence in the area of G'Modding.
I have read at least 30 threads (yeah, I'm not going through hundreds of threads, I wouldn't expect anyone to) on this subject and have not found my answers. I have, however, learned a heck of a lot from the threads I have read. Further, I think you guys are referencing threads that talk over the head of many new G owners. The use of abbreviations are helpful and meaningful to regular forum users but to newbies it's "waamp waaamp waaamp". No offense. Lastly, most of the information on this subject is scattered. Much of the compiled info applies to "do it yourself" folks. Well I'm not gonna do this myself because that would be dumb for me as I wouldn't know what the hell I was doing.
Anyway, on to my questions...
My car: 2004 G35x Sedan black interior.
I am planning to have a Pioneer AVH P4000 installed (not for the dvd but primarily b/c I have satellite radio and the stock radio doesn't allow for me to view artist/title, which defeats the purpose of satellite radio).
I cased out an audio shop for the install and was told the following.
1. Install of radio unit = $80.
2. Double DIN Kit = $50.
3. I need a Pioneer Adapter for SIRIUS b/c factory won't work.
4. I need new SIRIUS antenna b/c factory won't work. (I read a thread in which a member said this was not true.)
5. Installation for SIRIUS Pioneer Adapter = $140 (on top of radio install)
My questions.
1. Was I quoted the correct price for the DD Kit? I thought these Kits were in the $200-$250 range?
2. The guy didn't say anything about the DD Kit installation being extra because of the A/C Control issues. Should I expect more fees due to the a/c control issues?
3. This unit has way more going on with it than I need. I just want to be able to listen to FM/AM radio, Satellite Radio, Play Ipod. Other than what I mentioned above, what else will I need to make these functions work? I remember reading about some sort of "harness". Will this come with my radio or will it cost extra?
4. My car comes with 6 disc changer. Will this new install cause the factory disc changer to be completely removed?? Will I have to buy another disc changer as a result?
I apologize for coming off brisk. I want to know when I walk in the door what should/should not be applied to my G. I want an aftermarket HU but I'm not willing to screw up my G for one. Also, being female, I want to know generally what the install should involve. You tend the get the run around when you have these
. (I always pretend I'm getting the work done for my boyfriend, that way they may think if the work is crap a guy is gonna come back to the business and raise hell.) The guy on the phone thought I sounded pretty knowledgeable (have no idea where he got that) for a "chic". I just want to know as much as I can before going in, not that I expect you all to provide ALL THE DETAILS but if you could assist with answering my questions I'd be grateful. Thanks again.

Hey there...
When you install a new stereo into a G35 (coupe or sedan), you need a double din kit, wire harness, and antenna adapter. You can either purchase a JDM DD kit or buy an aftermarket one made by Metra. The JDM one is near $300 and the Metra one is near $200. They said $50, so either they are hooking you up big time on the Metra kit, or they are not familiar with a G35.
The wire harness and antenna adapter is aftermarket and made by Metra as well. Those two parts should be about $20-$25.
If I am not mistaken, the Metra includes the 'dual' button so you should be ok in terms of retaining your A/C, but I would confirm that with the store, since we always use the JDM kit when working on G35's.
To answer your question regarding playback, am/fm/cd/dvd are all built into the unit. In order to playback your ipod, you need to get a Pioneer ipod cable, CD-1200. This cable is about $25-$35.
To do Sirius, you will need a Pioneer CD-SB10 and a DEI SCC1. The combination of these two units will run you about $100-$150.
When you change your headunit, your cd changer will no longer work. It is designed to only work with your factory headunit. You can always buy a Pioneer cd changer, but if you are going to be listening to your ipod, chances are that you will not need a cd changer.
One thing you didnt mention were your steering wheel controls. When you change headunits, you lose control of the new stereo. You can regain those controls if you purchase a PAC SWI-PS. That part is about $75 and labor to install it should be no more than $75.
As for the labor, we would charge about $100 or so for that unit and $100 for the Sirius installation, so their prices are okay.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Sup Forum,
First time posting and want to piggy back on this thread. I also have a 2004 G35 and recently had a Pioneer AVIC-D3 unit installed by a local audio shop. The shop only carried the Metra DD Kit, so although I wasn’t too happy about having my OEM AC controls buttons replaced with those “soft-touch” Metra buttons…I went ahead with the install. The install came out better than expected, however I’m now seeing an issue with the Metra buttons. All the controls work correctly, however the lights of the top 3 buttons (view attached) will simultaneously “flicker” periodically.
I’ve witnessed the flickering more when the AC unit is turned on, but they also flicker when the AC is off. Now the flicker is very quick (maybe about a second) and it’s not a constant thing, however this small nuisance is driving me crazy! I took my G3 back to the audio shop so they could see it as well. The shop tech advised they will look at it with no problems, however I’m now concerned if this is just a “wire mishap”, defective controls, or a known issue with these Metra kits.
Has any other members with the G35 Metra DD kit witnessed this?
How should I handle this with the Audio Shop? They've already come back with some BS about "it’s an aftermarket kit so it’s not going to be perfect"
TIA,
- Jay

Metra is a well known company. Insist that the shop replace it with another one or give it back to them.
I guess there is a difference between the Metra kit and OEM, other than the buttons.

Yea... Metra is a good brand so I am sure this is not an example of... 'hey, its aftermarket'. I would request another kit from the shop. If they refuse, then I would ask them to give you a refund on the kit and you should purchase a JDM dd kit.
Thanks for the quick replies and feedback. I wanted a JDM kit, but the shop only carries the Metra kit and was advised they won't install items not purchased in the shop itself. The audio shop is reputable and good on customer service, so I'm sure I won't have an issue getting the kit replaced. I was just wondering if I should be concerned about a possible bug in the kit that causes the flicking issue. I haven't seen any other postings on the matter, so I probably have nothing to fear. I'll keep you updated on the results.
Thanks again

Most good shops should install OEM parts for their customers. Since your shop doesn't, they should definitely replace that defective Metra unit, especially since they installed it.
Sup forum,
I'm little PO'ed right now, so forgive me in advance if I come across abrasive. I took my G3 back to the audio shop that performed the installation of my AVIC-D3 with the Metra DD kit and they were cool with replacing it to correct the AC control issue plus an issue with the right side of trim not fitting correctly\flush to the AC vent. I took Gilley's advise and asked them about installing a different DD kit for me. I showed them the JDM DD kit online and they actually agreed to install the JDM kit if I ordered it and brought it in. We also agreed on a decent price for some JL Audio subwoofers and amp to install. Well I got with Tony and Ricky at Riverside Infiniti (I can't say enough about these guys...truly class acts and good to work with) and ordered the last JDM kit they had with the Titanium trim and Willow colored AC borders. So far everything was looking up and I was excited about how everything was going to turn out
...well...
Thats when everything took a turn for the worse. I dropped my G3 off yesterday at 9AM, and by 11AM they were calling me with issues
. First, they called to say the JDM DD hole was too big and my HU wouldn't fit properly without a 'designed' plate to fill in the gaps. I said "ok...you guys should be able to do this right?" (keep in mind, this is a well known audio shop in Richmond, VA that has been in business for years). They advised they could...but it would look like crap compared to the Metra kit. I must admit, the Metra kit does have a matching silver colored plate that fills in the gaps and gives the appearance of a very clean install. So I said, "you can't use the silver plate from the Metra kit on the JDM kit???", which they stated they tried but it wouldn't fit. Afterwards, the shop tech advised they will try to fit the JDM AC controls into the Metra kit and try some other different options and will give me a call back. By this time, I was getting a little heated because I couldn't believe this JDM kit would be so difficult to install for a reputable audio shop!!!
So I get another call from the shop around 2PM, advising me the JDM AC controls don't line up correctly with the Metra kit so this won't work as well. By this time, I'm about to go the hell off!! The shop tech advised he will leave everything apart so I can come up to the shop to look at everything and get a visual of what's going on. So I have my Mom take off from work to pick me up from work, get caught into two major traffic jams on the highway
, just to get to the shop and discover they put another Metra kit in my car that is still having the same f*cking issue with the right side of the trim not sitting flush to the AC vent. So what are they doing to resolve this (???)...they wedged a piece of cardboard between the right trim and vent to try and force the trim in place!!! I wish I could've taken a picture of it because you wouldn't believe it unless you saw it!! By now, I'm fuming but trying to remain calm and asked, "why can't you guys just use the JDM kit and make a clean looking plate for my HU"...why is this so difficult? They stated they could, but it will take 4-5 HOURS to make a custom plate that I would have to be charged for (???). While on site, I immediately called Riverside Infiniti and spoke with Tony about what was going on with the JDM Kit. He couldn't believe what I was telling him and stated he's never had one complaint from anyone not being able to install a after market HU using the JDM kits. Tony himself said if they're a good audio shop they should have black plastic plates or something to fit around the gaps to make the HU look professionally installed. By this time, I was just so mad and didn't want to cause a scene (especially with Moms around) so I just agreed to seeing what my car will look like after they finish everything. Mind you, the shop has had my car since yesterday morning and as I type this...I haven't heard anything from them on my car being ready. This entire experience has been a f*cking nightmare. Even if the AC controls on the Metra Kit are working properly, I'm sure the trim issue won't be resolved (especially by wedging some damn cardboard to force the trim in place !!!). Not only that, but now I have a brand new unused JDM kit that I ordered for nothing!!
Need some advice members - The audio shop has had my car since yesterday morning and although I'm sure the system will sound fantastic with the new sub's, I know I won't be pleased with the visual outcome from them using the Metra kit. After dropping 2G's on the entire install, I want to go back to this shop and raise holy hell but I'm not sure what good it will do! Should I just cut my losses and find another audio shop that will install the JDM DD kit...or just let it go and not make a big deal over the AC vent issue with the Metra kit. I'm just so mad that I can't think clearly right now...
Please help calm a brotha down with some good advice on how to properly handle this!
TIA and for letting me vent
