LOC or Y Cable for Sub?
LOC or Y Cable for Sub?
I don't know if this is a tuning issue, or its a power issue.. but I'm having the following problem with my setup:
Since my LOC is a 4 channel, it covers the front/back speakers.. but NOT the sub. I am using a Y Adapter to run the sub off the rear speakers (this isn't too bad as I used to do this on my old sentra since I only had 2 RCA's on my old Alpine deck.)
My question is:
Why is SOME music unbearable (almost as if the sub is overpowering everything) but in other music its the way its supposed to be? I'm noticing this more with the Rock music than anything else.
I have the 10W04 JL sub in a sealed box as a point of reference. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated!

Re: LOC or Y Cable for Sub?
I was told that the Qlogic box I'm using SUCKS since its a universal box and it isnt designed for the JL which is why some of it sounds good but some of it sucks.. Any opinions??

Re: LOC or Y Cable for Sub?
I suggest running a Y cable on the front and rear channels. Use the gains to calibrate the rear and front volume to set your "fader" level. Then run the sub off the rear channel of the LOC. Then you can use the fader control on the radio to adjust the sub level.
As far as the sub power level sounding inconsistent between music types, try a higher crossover point. Rock & Roll tends to sound good with stronger amounts of higher-frequency bass in order to generate the bass drum "thump". Other music like top 40 reaches into the lower octaves. If you pumped your sub up to hear the rock & roll drums, the lower notes will be overpowering on top 40 (and perhaps other rock songs). A higher crossover point and lowering the level tends to smooth the relationship between the two out a little, although you'll still want to fiddle with it based on music type, hence my fader suggestion above.

Re: LOC or Y Cable for Sub?
I emailed David Navone, and he suggested I disconnect one one of the RCA's for the sub channel.. forgive my ignorance, but why would that fix it?

All Subs are mono, therefore 1 RCA connection.

The only trouble with that is if you just tap into one side, you're assuming that the music was encoded with an equal level of sub bass in both channels. If the music has some instruments encoded on the right channel only and you have tapped into the left for your sub, you'll be missing some of the bass.
Actually playing it from the left or right side isn't as important because sub bass isn't directional. But you do want to try and sum the left and right channels for your mono output.
