Why is XM radio better in FL???
Why is XM radio better in FL???
I noticed a marked improvement in XM reception as I drove south from NY to FL. While dropouts are common up here, they are almost non-existant in Florida. I gather this has something to do with satilite location, but if that's the case WHY???? If the XM folks had to bias their satilite location to one part of the country, it would seem that the Northeast, with the highest population concentrations, should be the beneficiary, not the other way around. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Re: Why is XM radio better in FL???
The farther south you go, the more overhead the satellite angle is, and the chance for obstruction caused by trees, buildings, etc. goes down. If you were to drive to the equator, the geosync satellite would be directly overhead (though XM's footprint is only aimed at the continental US).
As you go south, you are also getting slightly closer to the satellites, though this is such a small difference that it would not likely be observable in reception quality!
