amp selection

I'm an audio noob. Anyone wanna explain to me why some amps are cheap but have tons of power and some amps are expensive and have little power? How do you know if the amp will produce "clean" power?

Can anyone tell me if this is good? The site says its "HIGH END" but i find it really hard to believe.

http://www.infinitecaraudio.com/cgi-...atalogno=MK470

The same specs with other brands cost around 250-300$.

Re: amp selection

I am by no means an audiophile, but I have read a bit on the internet in terms of consumer reviews.

Rockford Fosgate, JL Audio, Phoenix GOLD, and others like that are expensive. They aren't weak really, but they are expensive, and high quality.

MTX Audio and JBL are likely the two that I am contemplating. Damn good power and quality for the price.

Boss, Pyle, and Sony will get you some power for a cheap price, but you won't be happy with what they output.

If someone disagrees, please comment. These opinions are just what I've read to be the general concensus on the internet.

Re: amp selection

And now I realize I didn't even really answer your question.. haha, sorry..

Ok did a quick google, and found this:

Not THAT helpful, but probably tells you that this thing is likely not worth it.

Re: amp selection

You get what you pay for, basically. You can find those 1000w amps for a 100 dollars with like no name, no specs. Then you can look at the JL audio amps and find yourself dealing with hundreds of dollars for a single amp. Same goes for subs, speakers everything in the audiophile world. If you're looking into a good sounding system that isn't too expensive, I'd recommend Alpine. They have superior head units, but their speakers / amps are great if you aren't going for top of the line.

Re: amp selection

I just need an amp to power some new speakers I want to get. I'm looking at mb quart, jl, boston acoustics, or infinity. So I think I need a 4 channel amp for the front and rear speakers??

Re: amp selection

There are a couple of issues:
1) Not all amps rate their "power" the same. Cheaper amps may say they can produce "500 watts of power!!!!", but if you read the details, they're quoting the peak power of the amp. Higher-end amps will report "RMS", (Root Mean Squared (average)), or continuous power. If they say they produce 100 watts RMS, it means you can get a solid 100 watts, all the time. They may also give you a peak power rating.
For good sound, you want to make sure you have access to enough power. When looking at amps, compare their RMS power ratings.

2) Amplifiers need to be able to produce "clean" power. Here's where you really get what you pay for. A cheap amp will change the sound a bit. You don't want "colored" sound, you want clean sound.

There are a lot of decent cheaper amplifiers out there. It just depends on the amount of power you need (BAs and MB Qs like lots of power), and the amount of money you are able to spend.
I'd say that a "good" four channel amp that gives you 50 watts RMS will cost around $350.

Good luck.

Re: amp selection

what is a good amp or amps for this setup?

1 x JL 10w3v2
2 x MB Q components for the front
2 x tweeters (either MB Q or Boston Acoustics)

obviously not looking for audiophile quality, just a decent setup that will still be 100x better than the original bose. I mostly listen to R&B and Pop so good bass and good vocals are important

what should I do with the rear components and 6x9's?
most people remove the 6x9s right...

How will this setup sound and how much will it cost approx?

thanks guys

Re: amp selection

today i went back and i can only see 3 speaker locations each side. 1 is the tweeter which is located at the side view mirrors. 2 is in the door, 3rd is right near the lower feet area of the back seat. This is for the COUPE.

Re: amp selection

I'm guessing you don't have the premium audio option... cuz I have 2 6x9's behind the rear headrests/ on rear deck.

but you won't be needing those anyway if you are getting a sub.

Re: amp selection

fluffy, you're not going to change out the middle speakers? I think pheonix gold or JL audio looks good for amps..pretty high quality and the MBquarts will probably need the power.

Senupi:
For what it's worth, I just had a major stereo install done on my coupe. We put in BA Pro 6.5 components front, DISCONNECTED the rear panel midranges, replaced the 6x9s with BA 69 coaxials, and put Kicker CVR-8 sub below trunk floor in a sealed enclosure. I drove them with an Eclipse 3532 5-way amp. This is a high quality, not exorbitantly priced setup that turned out very, very nice.

Re: amp selection

can you run the rear mids and the 6x9 on the same channel? I'm thinking of getting two amps either a 5 or 6 channel and a mono amp for the sub. with the 6 chan i'd keep some 6x9 in the set up i guess... i dunno
Its PHOENIX GOLD R9.0:5 or AUDIOBAHN A6601T i'm looking at.
how is Audiobahn's quality?

Yes. If you're using the factory speakers, run them in series though to give your amp a 4+ ohm load.

That means, for example, for the left rear channel, connect:

Amp + to Left Panel +
Left Panel - to Left Rear Deck +
Left Rea Deck - to Amp -

Re: amp selection

Sure, you can, but the question is--why? The rear side panel mids only muck up the sound because of their design. Right now the rear passengers hear nothing but sonic mud, but with properly powered, quality coaxials in the rear, they get much better sound, and this is most important, the coaxials allow for superior staging for the driver. Don't under-power your speakers in an attempt to get "more" sound--you need superior sound, not more of it. My 2 cents. If you could listen to my G, you'd be convinced.
