XM for my birthday questions

Hey there

I just received an XM Commander system (with the new small antenna) for my birthday that was purchased from HiFi Buys. I have a non prewired 2003 sedan with the base system and no "sat" button.

My friends also bought me the install from the HiFi buys store here in Atlanta (buckhead).
Since the store is going to be looking for the quickest a simplest way to do the install, I need to be armed with very specific directions for them. So here are my question for you?

Is it possible to do the Direct connect in the base sound system? If so, what do I need to do or tell the shop to make sure it is done properly?

Where is the best place to have them install the receiver?

Where is the best place for them to put the antenna?

Is it safe to assume the shop guy will know how to dismantle my existing system or not? Should I print out the installation directions from these forums and give it to them?

Any other advice before I leave them with my car would be helpful.

THanks

Re: XM for my birthday questions

The Commander is an FM modulated unit. It's possible to hook it up w/ RCA's as well but you don't have any AUX inputs on your stock head unit so you'll need to go the FM mod route. Fairly easy install for any repuatable installer. Sound wise...it won't sound as good as direct input but it still sounds decent. Mounting the control unit is up to you...I've seen them installed in visors, ashtrays & even above the steering wheel. It's all how trick you want to get & how much $$$ you want to spend. You can mount the antenna in several places as well like on the dash, rear deck or outside the car for the best reception. I mounted mine on my dash...check my profile for a pic. More than likely the tuner/FM mod unit will be installed under you seat or in or under your dash. Hope I helped...feel free to PM me if you have any other Q's.

Re: XM for my birthday questions

It seems they will be able to do the install into my ashtray without too much of a problem (so they say). The guy mentioned that the antenna on the dash is not a good as outside the car. Have you noticed a lot of dropped signals from the dash?

Yes, you definitely get a better signal w/ the antenna on the outside. But I've had my antenna on my dash for almost 6 months now & haven't noticed anymore dropouts than the antenna that's mounted on the roof of my 4Runner.
