Upgrade to Touch Screen NAVI?
I have an 05 Sedan with Navi. Does anyone know if it is possible to...
1) replace the OE pop up screen with a touch screen that pops up
2) replace the NAVI unit located above the glovebox with a DVD player and NAVI system compatible with the touch screen (so I can operate the DVD and the NAVI at the same time)
3) install PAC Audio AAI-NIS2
I DO NOT want to replace the OE Bose HU. Instead I want to hear my ipod and DVD through the PAC unit and be able to play DVD's and use the new NAVI system which is touch screen compatible. It would be nice to send the video from my ipod to the touch screen as well.

I too have an 05 w/nav and would like to do what you describe. Keep stock HU, but upgrade the nav screen to touch and be able to get a few other input sources (iPod, nav, etc.). So is the new Car Portal stuff from Kenwood an option? Have not looked in any great detail, but it seems that if you could get their touch screen (KOS-L702) mounted (tricky I realize), and their AV controller (KOS-V100 or V500) stowed away somewhere that you'd be off to the races. Just a thought. Anyone though about it?
With enough money, anything is possible.
That out of the way, in theory, you'd need to find a 7" touch screen and replace the screen that you currently have. It'd be simply disconnecting the harnesses on the side and top of the pop up nav oem setup and putting the new screen in there. That'll give you the pop-up touchscreen.
I know pioneer made those screens like 3 years ago, but I have no idea if they're still available as JUST a screen.
Now, for the nav, if you wanted to keep the same setup and simply change the screen, you're done, assuming you can hook up the factory system to the screen. However, if you're gonna replace the ENTIRE system, as oppossed to just a screen, you'd probably be SOL without a complete custom setup. I don't know of any GPS system that doesn't have a screen attatched to the unit itself.
So, it's possible to do, just not easy by any stretch of the imagination.

Well take a look at Kenwood's Car Portal offerings. They have a 7" touchscreen. Then a A/V controller to which you can plug in modules for nav, bluetooth, iPod, HD radio, SAT radio, etc. Seems doable to me. Hard part for sure is mounting the screen. Anyone familiar, like/dislike the Kenwood line?

One thing I'm unsure about it what to do with the stock navi controls if I switch out the display for a touchscreen?
Looks like the touchscreen, av controller, nav unit, bluetooth module, and iPod cable will run around $1,100... Guess I want to make sure it would all work before I pulled the trigger!

You won't retain any of the stock nav controls...at least not with a plug-n-play unit. Again, it's possible to do it, but, imo, not worth the $$ time or effort. Many units are now offering plug-n-play connectivity to steering wheel mounted controls (because that request has become so common). However, w/ a touchscreen unit, the OEM controls would be rather pointless. Honestly, if you're going to do a pop up screen similar to OEM, I would chuck the entire OEM unit and simply have a motorized lift attatched to the touchscreen so that it raises and lowers like the OEM (something I've thought of doing NUMEROUS times). That gives you the factory/stealth look of NAV while offering the features you want.
As far as Kenwood, they're a reputable and reliable company. Anything past that will come down to preference. OUt of all the car units I've used/installed/played with, the only namebrand I can say I don't like are Sony and Blaupunkt. Everything else is just semantics (sp).

Yes, I realize the stock nav controls will be useless, but what I was asking about was what to do with them (or the space now un-occupied by them)? Thought maybe someone had a clever idea.
Also, in case it was not clear from earlier posts, I'm looking to mount the KOS-L702 7" touchscreen in place of the OEM screen, on the motorized carriage. Thus chucking the entire OEM unit. The screen would then be attached to the Kenwood KOS-V500 A/V controller for nav, bt, iPod, etc. Hardest part for sure seems to be the mounting of the screen in the OEM carriage, as that's the unknown at the moment.
