non-Bose + Basslink = cheap?

Hi, I'm considering ordering a G with the minimum of options to keep within a certain budget so I was wondering if this would work...Could I hook up an Infinity Basslink sub to a non-Bose system (that I believe doesn't have a separate amp except for the one built in to the headunit)?

What I'd like to do is have the "built-in" amp in the headunit keep powering the 4 speakers and somehow "tap" the signal for the sub without sucking what little energy is going into the 4 main speakers. I've read that the Basslink should just use the speaker-level inputs since it can handle them fine. I don't know if I can use a crossover to divert the highs/mids to the 4 speakers and the lows to the sub. I don't know if I can add the crossover to the post-amplified signal. I've tried to find the answer reading through many many posts but couldn't EXACTLY find an answer to this question.

I'm thinking this may be the CHEAPEST way to get half-decent sound from what I've been reading? Any suggestions?

Re: non-Bose + Basslink = cheap?

$400 for effectively 2 X 10" subs with 200 Watt D Class amp, self enclosed and all. Sounds good to me. $400 is the price I was quoted including installation, and I am still trying to figure out whether the $150 "material charge" is authentic or not. My installer told me I would have to buy a $100 sub installation kit plus $50 worth of monster cable to install this sub.....

1) I don't even use monster cable on my $1500 home theater system, do I really need it to run a 8 inch tap into the stock amp? Can't I just use some relatively cheapo wire to hook up the bass?

2) What's with the generic $100 'Circuit City Sub Installation kit"? Can experienced audiophile shine some insights on exactly what type of connectors I need and how much they would cost?

Thanks in advance. I am getting my Basslink installed next week.

btw: I have the Bose system~

Re: non-Bose + Basslink = cheap?

youngjun91-
Pardon the question, sedan or coupe ??? I have an 04 6MT sedan with non-Bose system. I am in the process of investigating adding a sub. I went to a very well known mobile audio installer here in the burbs of Boston. He said he does not normally sell Infinity but he would order one and install it. He also said that since I have a sedan, I would not be happy with the basslink. I do not want to blow my windows out, just add a little bass. He recommended a single JL audio 10W-3 sub with one of their new e1400 amps. Everything installed will run $800 to $900 compared to around $400 installed for the basslink. He obviously wants to make more money and sell me the JL Audio setup. The nice thing is that if I want to upgrade or even downgrade from the JL audio setup, I could trade in the sub and/or amp at no charge. If I buy the Basslink from him, he said your stuck with it. Don't know what to do. Sorry I can't be more help youngjun91. Anyone with a Basslink in a sedan out there? How do you like it?

Re: non-Bose + Basslink = cheap?

Sorry, I am talking for a 6MT coupe, non-Bose system. Shads, I have a feeling he's trying to sell you something more than you need. I have heard Infinity home subs before and if that's any indication, this should be a great complement to a mediocre setup. In fact, the Basslink may become the best part of the entire system.

Would anyone else like to take a stab at my original question? Would I need to buy anything (substantively) else to make it work?

Re: non-Bose + Basslink = cheap?

OK, I found out from the infinity website that the Basslink wants to be connected via speaker wires spliced into all 4 speaker wire outputs in the head unit. I wonder if that's the best way though...I wonder how much of the 4 speakers' power the Basslink is going to "share".

Anyway, got a question for y'all about Crossovers. What would be nice would be to crossover the lows all to the sub while diverting the mids and highs to the smaller speakers. Any suggestions for good, affordable crossovers I can add to this setup?

Thanks

All I have to say is, is that normally, you get what you pay for. You pay $400 and you'll get $400 worth. Pay more and you'll usually get more, even if you install it yourself. Also, once you buy the Inf-basslink, you'll probably want more or something will not work like you want it to.... and then you're stuck with a sub you can sell on eBay for a lot less than what you paid for it. Then you still have to buy a good sub. My opinion is that you'll want more. Save for a month and get something you'll be happy with from the get-go... don't settle or you'll just end up spending even more money --- which is what you're trying to do in the first place.

Just my .02.

Re: non-Bose + Basslink = cheap?

Just a quick question, If you were to get an aftermarket amp with a sub, not a self contained powered sub, then youd have to use a line level converter so that you can have RCA inputs for the amp right? If you do that what would you recommend: splicing the signal to the back panel speakers, or could you just use the front panel speakers and have the crossover do the sorting? btw I have a 6mt non bose coupe
