Fiberglass ??
Fiberglass ??
I built a Sub Box out of MDF a few months back. It works great and the sub sounds great in it but the thing weighs a ton. I decided I wanted something a little more custom and lightweight. For this I have decided to make a fiberglass box. My question is simply what weight fiberglass do you guys recommend for this application and also where did you buy it from?
Thanks,
Chase

I never ended up finishing my fiberglass box, but maybe I can lend you some input from the research i did. I dont think the weight of glass is too important, since you are going to be layering. What I would recommend from my limited experience of what I was able to complete is...use a lighter weight chop mat to get the contours for your mold. After that you can start laying a heavier weight to bulk it up or the same until it is stable enough to pull out and work on.
At that point I used a heavier weight weaved glass for strength. I cut them up in to as large as pieces as possible that would still fit the contours of the shape without bunching. This will help with the strength of the structure. The thickness that you will end up layering the glass will depend highly on the shape and structure. It is strongest with more curves than flat(er) pieces or edges. If you are working with large flat pieces, it is recommended to cut a piece of mdf and blend the glass to the edges of it to secure it.
There are some great threads and members on other car audio forums that can help you out with a project like this. Check out Car Audio Forum and DIY Mobile Audio. They have forums dedicated to fabrication and some tutorials as well.
