Re: Valentine 1 Radar Detector..

I wish the valetine systems didn't look like they were from 1980 or else I'd get one. Has anyone mounted the hidden display flush in their car? In the cubby or ashtray or something?

Also, some places don't allow radar detectors so they will take them (just depends on where you are). In chicago suburbs your ok, but if you're in the city of Chicago they'll take it.

Re: Valentine 1 Radar Detector..

go to valentines page about pop radar. They have a few 8500's in their labs. Basically pop radar is very inaccurate. even the manual of Escort tells you to set the pop off cuz it fals. Well read the whole story on the BEEIII pop equipped radars. It's basically a ticket dispensing machine

Re: Valentine 1 Radar Detector..

I think POP radar uses discrete radar bursts of very short duration - a long stream of packets, if you will. If the electronics in your detector are not designed to identify this configuration, the radar is invisible to the detector.

The 2004 test said the Valentine was blind to POP radar, while the Bel outperformed the Passport on POP. Conclusion was the Bel was a clear overall winner if POP is used where you are driving.

But, check it out for yourself - I am no expert.

Re: Valentine 1 Radar Detector..

yes and when they update the program its free and we will not have to buy another detector for this or the next little change to radar based systems. Laser is much more deadly and we CAN detect that with the V-1.

I got busted with golden eagle k-55 instant on last march - thats no bell labs either and was completley busted at 88 in a 55 with no warning. Unfortunately there are no updates fro my 3/03 purchased detector. WTF

Re: Valentine 1 Radar Detector..

you sure valentine upgrades are free?

I coulda sworn they cost ~$50 or more. I could be thinking of something else though.

Re: Valentine 1 Radar Detector..

updates are NOT free. If its just a firmware upgrade they will charge you a smaller amount but if its a hardware change too, they will charge liek 159 or so...

I believe that firmware upgrades are free, but you pay for shipping. Full upgrades where they basically give you a completely new unit and full warranty, is $189. If you log on with your ser. #, they can tell you what, if any are the advantages of any upgrades.

Re: Valentine 1 Radar Detector..

Some thoughts:

Once you have upgraded your Valentine 1, you have now spent about $600.00 on it to bring it up to the performance of the BEL - which costs $300.00.

For me, I'm doing all my, ahem, low-level flying on the interstate. I only care about what is in front of me, because I'm moving pretty good. Besides, where I live, there simply are not enough troopers to require a detector with multiple source indicators.

Also, I need my detector NOW. I want POP protection NOW. What is to guarantee Valentine will come out anytime soon with a POP-enabled upgrade? Especially if you all keep happily buying their nonPOP version?

If I knew for sure the troopers up here never used POP, it would not be an issue. But I don't have a clue, and besides, they may start using it tomorrow. If the BEL saves me a single ticket it is worth it, IMO.

Besides, the darn thing just arrived, and it looks wicked cool!

Re: Valentine 1 Radar Detector..

I agree with you. I settled on the Vector 995 (similar model). I bought mine on the web for $235 + 15 for direct wire cord.
Yesterday, I went home for lunch. Got stuck on a phone call so I was very late in returning back to office. I took the least traveled street back to work. This street is notorious for radar hiding cops.
After 2 blocks my POP went off! I let off the gas I stayed @ about 35mhp till I spotted a cop between 2 cars pointing his gun @ the car in front of me. I would have been a sitting duck.
POP is real. It is a complicated procedure for the cops as they have to drop back to standard radar for a lock. You should read up on it.
The 995 also has voice alert, something no one has mentioned.
My Bel has already paid for itself.
I don't make a habit of speeding but come on, sometimes 35 is just too slow!

Re: Valentine 1 Radar Detector..

POP is much easier to beat in court than others and hard to beat on the street. If the radar is not on there is no way to detect it, POP mode is actually an on off funtion is it not?

However, when in pop mode if you get a bleep it should be for the non-admissible reading THE FIRST TIME and then he would have to switch over and fire again. WHy wouldn't you know he was there as he PRE busted you...am I losing it...

Re: Valentine 1 Radar Detector..

SixFive,
That was my impression as well. POP is basically a short burst of radar... and the Valentine1 is one of the most sensitive detectors out there... so theoretically it should display radar detection, if only for a split second, but you as the driver can then realize that it was a POP burst and slow down to the speed limit...
Seems to me that if a cop can burst at you, no radar detector can help. It would be too late if the detector detects the burst, kind of like Laser.

The only solution here is to drive with cars ahead of you, that way if there is a cop ahead, your detector will pick up those radar-bursts well before you reach the cop.

If you are on the open road and alone, you are quite seceptable to POP and Laser, no matter which detector you have.

Re: Valentine 1 Radar Detector..

Again, the Valentine 1 does NOT detect POP radar.

POP radar is not instant-on regular radar, rather it is a new format of radar, becoming more popular because most detectors do not yet detect it.

As I understand it, it sends a steady stream of short duration packets of signal - too short to register on all but those detector set up to detect it.

Now, this is only how I understand it - do not take my opinion as gospel! And I certainly have no idea about the legal aspects of POP in court.

But, read the 2004 comparison tests and youwill see the differences in detectors. The Valentine 1 is currently completely defecient in its ability to detect POP, and its website does not even mention it as a liability.
