How's our factory alarm?

Hey folks, I live in kind of a bad neighborhood and I'm starting to get a little nervous about parking my car on the street. How's the stock alarm in the sedan? Is there a good alternative out there that will be more "theft-proof"? Thanks.

Andrew

We don't really have an "alarm" per se.. its more like a keyless entry/immobilizer.. You can always install an aftermarket 2 way paging alarm.. but regardless if someone really wants to break in they will.. If you look at the faq someone added a shock sensor to the stock system, so you might want to give that a shot

if you are really worried then i would go for a 2-way paging system, basically whenever the alarm goes off, your keyfob is automatically "paged"

I am not sure what the working radius of this is, but its probably within 100 meters (just a guess)

That compustar wss (spread spectrum) supposedly can page up to 6000 ft.

I've heard good and bad things about the alarm though.. Supposedly when it first came out, had all these problems... but now they've fixed it, so it should be alright.

I also couldn't find it anywhere but ebay, so you never really know if you're getting the old version or the new version.

Re: How's our factory alarm?

The Gs DO have an alarm. If you open the hood, trunk, or doors before unlocking the doors the lights flash and horn honks. There, however, are no external shock/motion sensors, which does limit the ability of the alarm somewhat.

Try this - Lock the car, with the windows down. Wait a minute or two and then, without opening the doors pop the hood. This will also work if you open the doors (without unlocking) or trunk.

There is a DIY for adding a single stage shock sensor to the factory alarm. This is a great way to add more security to the factory system.

Re: How's our factory alarm?

I am not sure what your exact motivation is behind the alarm inquiry. If you are concerned about your car getting stolen then the factory alarm is as good as any aftermarket alarm. If you are concerned for the contents of the vehicle then no alarm can protect your vehicles contents. I sold mobile electronics for 5 years and the best advice I received was from our Ungo rep who told me if you sell customers alarms to protect the contents of their car, you will have many unhappy customers. If you really want to protect your car from theft the factory alarms is fine. You can augment it with a stolen vehicle recovery system but all the good ones are out of business, the technology is to far ahead of its time. Companies such as Teletrac and Seeker systems where put out of business by a miss informed public and an immature cellular network. Enough with my disappointment.

LoJack is worth it to me, just for the chance to catch the SOB that stole my car if it ever happens. I really think it depends where you are parking it at night.

Re: How's our factory alarm?

The stock alarm sucks. My car got broken into about 400ft from where I sit. If the don't open the door( and i think thieves know this about our cars) the alarm don't go off because it doesn't have shock sensors.
