need help upgrading audio

hey guys, i have finally decided it is time to upgrade the stock bose system. i'd like to replace all 6 speakers and also put in a DD. my budget is roughly $1200 give or take.

as far as DD goes, i want a unit that works extremely well with the ipod. (i have about 160 gb of music on my ipod) and would also like good navigation. i was leaning towards the pioneer avic d3 ($600). any opinions or other recomendations?

i have no idea what to do for the speakers. i know i would like to also replace the stock amp. what are some good speakers that dont cost an arm and a leg.

from what i read. speaker sizes are: front - 6 3/4. rear side- 6 3/4. rear deck 6x9.

eventually i will also sound deaden the car. not sure if i will go for it right away or wait for funds to come around.

thanks for the help guys!
dream.

Hey..

I like the Kenwood DNX-5140 is a very good DD. Not only it has the Ipod features but has a precise GPS that is powered by Garmin. Its roughly around $600 as well if not maybe cheaper.

Speakers? Alpine Type R/S are good and affordable. Get components. You should also run thicker gauge wire to the speakers as well one time.

Amp? Depends if you want to add subs/or just power the speakers. May need two amps, if not one. Alpine/Kicker/Kenwood = Affordable.

Are you going to install it yourself? Try to get a custom fiberglass enclosure/carpented enclosure. Try not to do the plain box, even though nothing against it but keep the setup clean overall.

$1200 is a tall order in my opinion with amps, DD and 6 speakers. I might also suggest an alternative to the 6-speaker setup. Ditch the rear 4 entirely. They serve almost no purpose. Add a sub and focus on the front 4. Great soundstage, simple operation and can get by with one 5-channel amp. Could be I'm partial because that's where I'm at, but it definitely satisfies.

The D3 has excellent ipod control, it will do movies also
Nav is really good also

dont even bother with the rears, just upgrade your fronts and add an amp

for the price you are talking about id look in the classifieds/craigslist/ebay

components and subs are all different to different people, no one can give you a straight answer about this.

Take a listen to alot of set ups.....but even then the speakers wont sound the same in your car. Different amps, boxes, placements all make a difference.

over all JL is good stuff, some say its pricey but if you have the money go for it

4080 box is what your looking for

I just replaced my stereo yesterday with a Kenwood 8120. I don't have an IPod yet (well I did someone broke in and stole it), but I hear Kenwood has the best interface for IPod. I replaced my four stock speakers with Infinity Kappas about two years ago. They sound pretty good I would defintely recommend them to someone. They do run at 2 Ohms though if you are interested you also will probably need some speaker spacers. I left the 6x9's and Bose Amp alone for now since it sounds pretty good still. But eventually will swap out the Bose amp when I have the time to.
