Help! Factory Bose system whine :(
Help! Factory Bose system whine :(
Yesterday while driving I noticed that I started hearing a whine that varied in pitch with the engine rpm... I had never noticed the noise before, and it was really pronounced. I went home and let the engine idle and I still heard the whine, although it sounded almost like a buzzing. It was coming from the front right speaker, not sure if it was coming from the tweeter too.. it didnt appear to be coming from anywhere else.
I opened the hood cause I had to put winshield washer fluid in and filled it... left the hood open for a little while because it was hot, then closed it after 10 mins or so. I went out to eat (in another car) and when I came back, the whine was gone.
This morning I went driving and didnt hear anything, so I figured it was gone. After 30mins of driving (pretty hard driving), I hear the noise again. After another 10mins or so it seemed louder. I noticed that if I turn the stereo off with the power button on the steering wheel, the noise still comes (whine with engine rpm). When I came home, I turned the car off, but when I moved the key back to the 1st position, the radio came on with no noise! When I moved it to ACC the noise started again, and stayed even if I turned the radio off while the key was in ACC or the engine was started!
Any advice/suggestions? I would like to solve this without carrying the car to anyone. I thought this kinda thing was associated with grounding, but its odd that the noise comes after a bit of driving so I dont know..

Re: Help! Factory Bose system whine :(
After coming inside and typing that I went back out and with the key in ACC i hear nothing... so it either goes away or is inaudible if I let the car sit for a while. Any help is appreciated...
Re: Help! Factory Bose system whine :(
it could be the grounding, but it also could be the wiring of the speakers, or maybe that channel on your bose amp is messed up...
It could be a whole bunch of things. The tweeter+door speaker are actually connected together in the door panel. They act as "one" speaker channel so thats why the whine is heard from both the tweeter+door speaker.

Re: Help! Factory Bose system whine :(
If it's the factory system, why not just take it to the dealer and let them deal with it? There's so many possibilities. I would guess the Bose amp or the HU is busted, or maybe wire running from the amp to that door is pinched somewhere. Since it seems to be heat related (since the noise stopped after letting it cool) I'd say it's more likely to be the electronics inside the Bose amp or the HU rather than a wire. Because you still get the noise with the HU "off" it's probably the amp.

Thanks for the replies..
I'm in the caribbean with my car and dont want to send it to another island or the states to have any work done unless its really major or I have no choice... and I dont want to carry the car to someone locally to have work done unless its beyond my abilities. This sounds like something I can handle...
As far as the bose amp goes, I thought it powered only the rear speakers?
So far I think that the problem is either the HU motherboard, the HU's ground, the motherboard-wire connectors, the wiring, or the wire-speaker connectors.. any comments (agree/disagree or other ideas) before I start looking for it?
I was planning on replacing the entire stereo anyway, but I'd like to get this taken care of if possible... hopefully it wont affect me when I do an all new HU/amp/speaker system.

Re: Help! Factory Bose system whine :(
Mine does it, the loaner I had does it. It's normal. Just get use to it and keep music playing. I usually don't hear it when the volume up.

The bose amp powers all 8 of your speakers...
The headunit's 4 channel output is wired to the bose amp, then back to your 4+2 speakers and your 2 open-air subs in the rear deck
