Problem with my JL 500/5

I thought my MB quart QM 218.61 components blew so I replaced them with Infiniti 6.1 Perfects. Still no sound.

After further inspection, installer informs me that I burned out two channels of the amp itself.

I am not sure if those MB quarts are working or not. either way they are getting thrown out, now that they are replaced.

I never heard of an amp burning out. Is this possible? What causes things like this to happen?

um, never heard of an amp buring out...

i know that the JL's cut to half gain when it overheats, so they should NOT blow!!!

contact JL directly!

Re: Problem with my JL 500/5

i had a Rockford Fosgate B.D 500/1 amp and it blew. it was pushing a 15" L7. the amp got so hot that it didnt even go into protection mode, i noticed a burning smell so i quickly stopped the car, looked in the back and my amp was smoking and had left a small burn on my carpet "99Eclipse". so its possible to blow an amp but i dont see how it would have running components.

Re: Problem with my JL 500/5

I am in alil bit of a financial tightspot so I cant tell if it was the MB Quarts or the JL amp...or both.

I will take my car to a more reputable shop out in Long Island, NYC. I think its called Movin'On Sounds.

Now I am waiting for my Dynamat Xtreme trunk and door kits to arrive and also my 4080 stealthbox.

I think I will proceed with upgrading my amp by getting a JL 450/4 to power my comp's and coax's and 500/1 or 250/1 or the 300/2 to power my 10 inch sub.

I am trying to not go over 1200 bucks on amp and install. I am so broke these days...lol.

Re: Problem with my JL 500/5

I've been running my JL 500/5 for over a year and a half and I have never had any problems with it...and I run it hard daily...so I can't see how something like that could happen, I suggest you at least let JL take a look at it, do you have a warranty on it still???

Nismo, yeah I ran my system hard too. I dont really remember where I bought my amp from. No, I do not have the warranty. I threw out all the paperwork after I had the system installed.

Re: Problem with my JL 500/5

Try to remember where you bought the amp. If it was an authorized JL Dealer, they should have you in the computer and be able to take care of you. If they were not authorized or you got it off the internet you may be SOL.

Hope you can remember where you got it.

LOL...i got everything from various dot coms and I dont think anyone was authorized dealers fo anything. That makes me Mr. SOL.

I find you get great deals from these unauthorized duds but now I realize it's worht paying extra at authorized places of business. Oh well. I live and I learn I guess.

Re: Problem with my JL 500/5

Scrap your installer. Chances are your system wasn't run properly in the first place. Movin On Sounds is good, thats where my install was done. JL Audio Amps don't blow/burn out so be careful w/ whose installing your audio.

Vin,

I seen your setup when we met in Car Spa. How much did movin on charge to put that stuff in for you? And how long did it take them?

Re: Problem with my JL 500/5

You really can't blame the MB Quarts for blowing two channels of your amp until you've done a little research. Although a fried speaker can damage an amp, it is a simple matter to confirm now that they are out of the car. Hook them up to a home stereo or old head unit briefly and see if they play OK. If they do, it narrows the problem down to either a faulty amp or a faulty install, (and you can put the MB's on eBay an get a couple of bills). Since JL amps have a pretty strong rep, this could really point to an install or set up issue. The MB Quarts are not particularly efficient speakers; so if the gain is set properly on the amp; they should play to VERY high volume levels without any difficulty, and use much of the available power of the amp. I have these same MB Quarts in the front of my G with with a JL 300/4 driving the 4 doors, and it sounds fantastic. I can go way past comfortable volume levels (assuming one is sitting in the car, and not at a picnic 75 ft away!) with my set up with no noticible distortion.

Re: Problem with my JL 500/5

Black,

Movin On charged me $250.00 for the amp installation and box installation. The job was costly but it was done professionally and they are JL authorized.
Good luck.

Re: Problem with my JL 500/5

Ok I have some more audio related questions.

I have in my car now

-Infinity Perfect 6.1 comps in front
-Infinity Kappa 63.5i coax's rear
-4080 stealthbox (no sub in it..yet)

I am considering an economical fix to my dilemma. The amp I have in mind is the Phoenix Gold Octane R 9.0:5 whick is 125 x 4 + 400 x 1 watts or something like that. Or the Hifonics Zeuszx8000 5ch 800watt amp. The sub I am considering for my stealthbox is the JL audio 10w6v2.

My questions are

1. Are there any pros/cons of using one 5CH amp vs. using two seperate (one 4ch and one 1ch amps) amps?

2. Is it wise for me to invest in a 1 farad capaictor? If so which brand is good for under $100? They all look the same to me.

3. Is the JL 10w6v2 a good sub for the 4080 stealthbox? Is it a good match for these amp?

4. Are the amps a good match for the Infinity speakers in my car?

Pls advise. Thanks for your help.

Re: Problem with my JL 500/5

what's up BB,

I am planning to do a similar setup, with a JL 500/1 powering a 10W6v2 in a 4080 box.. and 300/4 or 450/4 driving either MB Quart QSD 216's or BA Z6's in the front and some under top quality 6.5" speakers for the rear ( Who cares about the rear right? Nobody sits there!!). From what 4080 has told me, the 10W6v2 will be perfect for his box. Good luck with your new setup and post pics when you're done.

John
