Ipod connection, please help!!!
Hello,
I used to own a 94 RX7 TT and sold it for a 2005 G35 Sedan X. I am happy with everything so far but desperately want to install something to play music from my ipod. So here goes a few questions:
1. Is $250-300 too much to pay for parts and installation? A local shop says it will be in that range.
2. Best Buy is willing to do it but is asking me to bring in parts, I have no idea what kit or necessary part to get it, can anyone give me a link?
3. Any suggestions as to which way to go, pro shop or best buy, where to install it, in the back or front, and what parts to purchase will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys,
Michael

seems a little high. If you shop around, $225-$250 is about what you can expect... $150 for the part and $75 for installation.

Depends if you want to add iPod to your factory HU or not.
Since you have an '05, it's probably due to have something from the factory audio system go out, so you might as well just do the DD conversion now and not spend any money on parts or install to get your iPod playing on something that's likely to fail within a year.
You can search this forum about failing factory head units, and take my personal experience - my wife's 06 (non-bose) had hers replaced before I bought it, and my 05 (bose) is already failing to read cds in slots 3 & 5.
You can expect to pay $150 - 300+ for the trim kit (metra or factory JDM) + wiring and adapters (+$100) + head unit price to do this. May sound steep, but to have the dealership replace your factory head unit is $500, and no guarantee on how long that'll last.
If you're hurting for cash, get a $20 FM transmitter and enjoy it that way until your headunit goes out.

100$ for the basic inputs. For the ipod one i think it's like 160 or 180. If you get the ipod one that charges and all that jazz then 250 installed isn't bad. For the basic 3.5mm audio jack then that's a little high since the parts are only 100$

Right now the part is $140 w/ free shipping. I just got this over the holiday season. I have little knowledge about the workings of my car but installing was easy. The hardest part was running wires through. I still have yet to pull up the carpeting and get the ipod adapter cord right where i want it to go.
PROS - No Splicing, Cutting, Heavy Modding or extensive gearhead/electrical engineer knowledge required. steering wheel controls work. Audio quality is AMAZING especially if you had been using FM transmitters
CONS - installing it in a dormitory parking lot in 15 degree weather. It occasionally doesnt recognize that the ipod is connected but you just need to restart the radio and it works. Also, the steering wheel control for changing song is a little annoying. To change the song you need to hold it and flicking it doesnt work. However, you can change the song by pressing a button on the Head Unit.
To install, all i had to do was get to the sat radio reciever in the trunk, unplug the cord that went to the Head Unit, plug that cord into the cord from the ipod adapter kit (it had 2 male and 1 female connector), plug the cord from the ipod adapter kit into the satellite reciever unit and run the cord up under the driver's seat where it connects to the ipod adapter box. Then I plug in the other cord in the kit to the box then connect the ipod then listen in lyrical bliss.
Whatever you choose - Good luck

Thank you guys for all the help. I will shop around although I am still confused. I prefer purchasing the kit and having Best Buy do the installation. Then being charged $250-300 for a $150-200 job. We will see, either way it seems I wont have the transaction done before I head back to Richmond where I live. A few more months of mundane cd listening. Pretty upset.

The difference is that the NIS plugs into the back of the headunit while the INFI plugs into the trunk.

Direct mode meaning directly into the head unit? Or is it a setting? I think I would rather install from the trunk so I wouldn't have to tear apart the dash. That is, as long as the quality will be the same.

You'd have to double check to see how long the INFI cable is. I'm not 100% sure that it is long enough to route back up front in the cabin, unless you are okay with keeping your iPod/iPhone in the trunk like the OEM Nissan integration kit does. That, and you'd probably want to tuck the wire underneath the carpet or something if you do the trunk install.
The install take about an hour if you are taking your time. A full DIY with instructions can be found here:
