GPS mount in cubby (where can i get this mount?)
Sorry about the crappy pics my GF has my good camera....but here is what I did...I cut the ball off from the suction mount and attached it to the cubby....don't mind that screw off to the side that’s where I tried attaching the POS mount from GPS city...now I have a permanent hole in my cubby lid…I just thought it would look better with a screw lol..Also when I tried to make the GPScity mount work I had cut out the back of the cubby because it was sticking out too much…and wouldn’t let me shut the cubby lid.. even with the ball thing I have attached now it still wouldn’t of let me shut the cubby lid with the GPS attached to the mount...so I had to cut the back out either way if I wanted it work like that…i know it looks awful, so I’m going to have to get something to cover it up...I ran the power out the back of the cubby that I cut out and down to the cigarette lighter on the passenger side.

03-06 cubbies are all the same size, as far as i know...
(I have mine tilted with velcro atm) If I were to screw in it...the bottom screw would be too low to catch the cubby back...the mount is too long.
gotcha, i forgot the back of the cubby curves at some point. i wonder if i can cut off one end of the bracket and only screw 1 side.

yeah, *way* too far. you have at most 2-3mm clearance with the ball flush-mounted to the back surface of the cubby lid.
well, i spent some of yesterday and today trying to get it to work my way (acrylic sheet, ball epoxied to it, the whole thing attached via double-sided tape)... it simply doesn't work. either the bottom of the garmin mount hits the back wall of the compartment, or the bottom of the garmin mount hits the front lip of the compartment. in any case, the lid doesn't close right away, and has to be pushed down so the GPS can twist a little. i played with clearance, thickness, position of the ball - nothing helps. either the GPS is in an uncomfortable position and can't be adjusted, or the GPS looks fine but the lid doesn't close.
my 765t is simply not a very good candidate for this mod - it's too high, and the mount is too meaty. if it was a slimmer (the 1xxx series) or had lower-profile mount - perhaps...

offtopic. put it on ebay.
before i start cutting/drilling anything in my dash, i'm determined to find a usb cable that will successfully charge the gps. i researched all weekend and found most will put the gps in storage mode if connected to a usb to car adapter. however i found these 2 cables that supposedly work. if so, i'll be able to bypass the cradle and mount the gps directly on the cubby while charging the unit via usb.

the amazon reviews are mixed, but most of the negative ones stem from the fact that the buyers didn't realize these chargers were already included in their gps, so they bought it for nothing. or, they misinterpreted the description. when they read it was "compatible" for their unit, they didn't realize this was an alternative way to charge their unit so they were pissed when they found out this cable didn't go into their cradle (duh they could've realized that just by looking at the picture of the cable).
btw if you're wondering why the HTC charger would work, i found this FAQ on the Garmin Oregon, but should be applicable for other models:
P9.) When I plug the Oregon into a 3rd party power adapter or a computer it enters USB storage mass mode. When I connect it to a Garmin automotive adapter it works like a GPS, why? Can I change this?
The USB standard only allows a device to draw 100 mA without negotiating a connection with a USB host and requesting more current. For this reason, USB devices must have some method of detecting a "dumb" charger. While the USB Battery Charging Specification has standardized a method for doing this, many USB devices (including Garmin units) were designed prior to release of this specification and require other methods. A common method used by many devices is to use Pin 4 of a mini-USB Type B connector, which is defined as "not connected" in the standard.
For example, Motorola and BlackBerry chargers tie Pin 4 to ground using a 220k ohm resistor to indicate a "dumb charger".
Chargers for PDA phones manufactured by HTC tie Pin 4 directly to ground with no resistor.
According to http://pinouts.ru/GPS/garmin_nuvi_power_pinout.shtml, Garmin devices tie Pin 4 to ground with a 17k ohm resistor to indicate a 1A charger, and tie it directly to ground (exactly like HTC devices) to indicate a 500 mA charger. As the Oregon cannot charge an internal battery, a 500 mA charger (grounded pin 4) is sufficient for all operations.

checking the table of features on amazon, i believe the 780 doesn't come with the traffic adapter - it notes FM optional so i think i'm good. but i presume for those who have the 765T/775T where it is included this might be a setback. but nonetheless if this still powers up the unit, i'd EASILY give up the traffic feature (assuming i haven't signed up or shelled out any $ for a subscription). i'd much rather have a clean, reversible install than have to create a custom bracket or drill/glue anything in my dash. if i needed traffic updates, i'd just listen to my local AM station which is what i do every morning on my commute.
