How exactly does the factory "alarm" work??

Is it only a vehicle immobilizer??

I wanted to see if i could get a horn to beep or something on my 06. So i rolled the window down, hit the lock button on the I-key fob and then reached inside, unlocked the door and opened it. Nothing happened. i could get right in no prob.

So the horn doesn't beep or anything? I've had much cheaper cars in the past where the basic keyless entry system would still cause the horn to beep if the door was opened from the inside while locked. My G didn't do anything...or was I doing something wrong?

I ask because i caught a guy last week scoping cars last week @ 2AM. I saw him checking mine out (i keep the interior empty anyway because of this) but was trying to see if i the car would do anything if he tried to get in that night.

haha, I always wondered too but never tried it... did you keep it locked for a minute or two at least after pressing the lock button on your key fob?

No. I locked it and then immediately opened the door. If it wasn't snowing out, i'd roll the window down, lock the doors and walk away for 5 mins, put the keys in the house and then come back. However i didnt want to get snow inside the car tonight.

I know the red blinking button on the dash does stay solid for a few mins after locking. Perhaps I needed to wait til it started to blink? Maybe that's when it's armed?

Yes you have to wait til the solid light goes out, THEN the alarm is armed,

The factory alarm covers the doors, trunk and hood. It acts just like an aftermarket unit aside from the shock sensor. If you lock it typically 60 sec later all the zones are active. The intelli key needs to be away from the car for the system to work though. If someone opens the hood, trunk or doors the lights flash and horn blazes. Pretty much like if you hit panic on the remote.

If you left the window down and locked it up with the key away from the car it would go off when you reach in and open it up like the cheaper cars you mentioned.
