Illumination/Dimmer not working?

i just pulled out my head unit and atacked the new ac controler i havent put in a new cd player but withought one hooked up my dimmer doesnt work is this right do i have to have the dimmer wire hooked into a cd player for the rest of my stuff to work. i am planing on doing a carpc and not putting in a cd player what would i have to do to get the dimmer to work again or is there something else wrong

thanks for any help you could give me

Are you sure your dimmer isn't just set to full brightness?

yes i can put it all the way up or down and nothing changes

ok after further thought... to answer your question.... No you dont have to have the dimmer wire connected to a headunit for the dash lights to light up or dim. The dimmer wire will only dim what it is connected to... the headunit

something else is wrong with your system, check the fuses first, then pray that a fuse is burnt out, if not- then you blew the dimming bulbs

My guess is you shorted something out and messed up the BCM, body control module. It happened to me once on another G35 when messing with the wires that go into the headunit, accidentally shorted them. I hope thats not it though.

I may be wrong or maybe you tried this but doesn't the dimmer not work unless the headlights are on? Just a thought...
