NEED HELP with purchasing aftermarket DD navi...

I know this seems to be an endless topic amongst these threads...however, with that being said, I have racked my brain for many months, hours, minutes, etc and countless threads on what to choose.

I have a 2003 coupe with a stock pop up nav and a Bose sound system. my stock 6 disc cd changer took a crap and well my question is...

Would you prefer to go with a DD dvd player and keep the pop up stock navi? (maybe buy the updated disk for the stock navi? which I'm not sure how much it is or what disk # it is?)

Or

Do I look into an aftermarket DD navi/dvd/cd/ player such as a kenwood dnx 6140 or a pioneer unit?

After my research I've noticed that Kenwood seems to lead the market in the navigation industry with garmin, so I feel this may be beneficial since it might be more efficient that the updated stock navi disk for the stock navi that is available for our cars, (Even more so, I know when installing the unit we lose the voice on our stock navi, so imo that sucks) Yet I'm having a hard time grasping the idea of spending 700-1000.00 for a unit like this seeing as I'm a college student.

I'm basically looking for suggestions, ideas, input, etc. on this matter.

I like the idea of having bluetooth tech. in my unit too because of the hands free calling option.

I've looked at kenwood dnx6140, kenwood 7140, kenwood 6160, and units from pioneer, etc.

And I know crutchfield gives you the wiring harnesses and antenna adapter for free with your purchase but they seem to be way overpriced?

I looked at carstereoonline.com and they seem to have cheaper prices but you still have to buy the accessories.

I'm purchasing the JDM dash kit too so that's not an issue.

How much could I get these harnesses for and which ones do you recommend cause I was told there are a couple different kinds?

I apologize for asking so many questions, I guess I am just lost when it comes to this issue cause there is so many options.

Any light on this issue would be very much appreciated!

Thanks so much everyone!

~ Johnny.

I also live in Casselberry, Florida (A suburb of Orlando) too if you know of any good shops or sources I can resort to for help on this matter.

Check out my shopping list sticky for what harness you need and instructions to do it yourself - you have a 2003, so there's already a full video walkthrough in addition to the step-by-step instructions. It's really not that hard, and it'll save you enough for a few books/cases of ramen or whatever you college students need these days.

Since you're doing the JDM kit, you might as well keep your factory navigation as your primary navigation tool. Yeah, it's not as good as the garmin-based nav in a Kenwood, but it'll get you from A to B, so long as it's in the POI database.

In the realm of non-nav units, right now I consider the best option is the Pioneer
. (Video is the non-BT version) DVD, USB, iPod, Bluetooth.

If you're sure you want to use a navigation unit on a budget, the 6140 you mentioned is a good bang-for-buck unit.

If I went the avh-3200bt route I would still lose the voice on the stock navigation correct?

Without taking extraordinary measures, yes.

If you know basic relay wiring, it's not extraordinary at all.

be VERY cautious about finding sites with the lowest price

dealercostcaraudio.com has been very shady lately. They say they have it in stock but dont, and still charge your account.

Crutchfield is a very very good source to buy from, yes its retail price but you get a detailed install sheet, help via phone, and over all great customer service.

Sonicelectronix.com is good also.

6ave.com is an authorized dealer and they price down with the gray-market dealers on what they have in stock.

It's where I picked up my Z110BT.

I also picked up a Z110BT, but I got mine from Refined Performance

Had it to me in a few days with a harness as well!

Ok I think I have finally narrowed it down...

Pioneer AVH-3200BT

Pioneer AVIC-X710BT

Pioneer AVIC-X920BT

Just tossing around the idea as to which one now...lmao!

I really would love the fact of having a gps even though I already have a stock pop up navi and google maps on my droid phone...I just don't want to lose the voice on my stock navi...Wrathernaut, You said if you know basic relay wiring it shouldn't be an issue, however, I'm not going to be doing the install so that is what makes me nervous. I don't want to invest into one without navigation and sacrifice the voice being lost...

The 3200bt seems really legit because I can hook up my ipod, my droid phone or just load music from SD card. Also, there doesn't seem to be TOO MUCH of a difference from a 5.8 inch screen compared to a 6.1 inch.

Any thoughts?

Thanks so much!

Unless you're desperate for voice control of your iPod on a budget, avoid the X710BT.

AVH-3200BT is one of the best deals for the price, but no nav.
AVIC-X920BT is one of the best units out there, the only shortcoming is the navigation isn't as good as Kenwood's nav units.

You can always just get a small amplified speaker to attack to the voice signal and tuck it in the dash, avoid the relay altogether, but not quite as slick as doing a relay.
