Is $1,000 good enough for a decent sound system?

You kinda sound like youve already made up your mind. I completely agree with donpisto though. For what you are trying to spend on the 2 amps and sub, you can get a set of components also if you went with another brand. Just put a grill over the sub so the logo doesn't show and you can pick up an ed NINe.1 and a NINe.4/2. Both of those amps will cost you well under a JL 1000/1.
Your setup already went well over your budget, so does that mean you are willing to spend more? You are going to be adding a couple hundred more minimum for wiring as well, so make sure you dont forget to factor that in.

Damn well that sure does sucks, but yes 99% of the time I do listen to rap, but every now and then I will bump a little R&B or Reggae. So I'm pretty much looking for a nice deep thump if you know what I mean, As long as I can feel it inside of the car I will be happy. Also the reason I choose JL Audio, Because it seems like everyone on the forum have that set up. Let alone I did hear JL stuff and I was always Impressed.
Don't Get me wrong I heard.
1 15" FI sub w/ a JL 1000/1 amp pushing it (Verrrrry nice)
2 JL 10" W3's w/ a JL 5001/ amp (Def was Impressed)
2 Elemental Design 12" Subs w/ their Amp (Hit's very hard)
2 JL 13.5 W7 pushed by 2 JL 1000/1 Amps (Tooooooooooo much bass for the coupe)

Can't really compare a Hummer to a G35. Totally different cabin sizes.
IMHO, I'd ditch the JL amps. You can get and Audiopipe, yes they are considered "cheap" by most, but they will do rated power. This amp does 3,000w RMS... http://www.caraudiodeals.com/audiopi...1d-p-1453.html
MUCH cheaper.
Look into Audioque as well. Better quality than the audiopipe, tad more expensive, but if you look into the power range you need...much cheaper.
AQ 2200D (2200 RMS @ 1 ohm) = $389 shipped
http://www.audioque.com/aq/?page_id=28
AQ1200D (1200 @ 1 ohm RMS) - more comparable to the JL 1000/1 = $249 shipped
http://www.audioque.com/aq/?page_id=26
And for a 4 channel amp, they have the AQ4X90 for $229 shipped. Does 4 x 90 @ 4 ohms. Plenty of power. I'd run these over JL just because of the cost AND it's still great quality.

If you want a sub that really pounds, then go with the HDC3. It'll hit the higher notes better 40's -50's. 30's not so much, talking about frequency. Lower you go, the less you hear, more you feel.
The Mach 5 IXL can be had for $200 + shipping for a single 15". $170 for a 12". It'll play those lower frequencies better too.

The 15 needs 3 cu. ft. sealed and the 12's require 2 cu. ft. each.

I would go with the TC Sounds drivers...blazeplacid had also mentioned those. They will sh*t on the JL W713.5 anyday, (the ones with the 3HP motor). That would be the Axis model...but even the LMS-R would be a better choice. Will sound better than the W7. Prob get louder too. Rated at 1k (lol) and max at 4k. It'll easily handle 1,500w.
