Installed Avic Z2

First of all, I will post up some pictures of the install in a bit. Overall, the install went well, but I have run into a few issues.

I moved my Z2 to my new G35. When I switch to the Sat (Sirius) setting I only had sound out of the right side of the car. I checked the other modes and FM/AM, DVD, and Library all produce sound out of both sides. Also, the iPod cable hooked up off of the Sat radio only comes through on one side (This is not the iPod adapter from pioneer, just a cable with an additional aux headphone jack as well). This unit was working fine when I removed it from my BMW.

Is it possible the Ip-Bus cable is bad?

Also, in library mode the sound is very loud, but in DVD and FM radio it is a bit quite. I used the Metra 7551 and have read that some people have sound level issues. Are there any solutions to making it louder. Also, in library mode, I get a little distortion when I have it turned up and there is a lot of bass in the music. Not sure if this is because the headunit is at its max volume or if it is another issues.

Thanks!

The sound level issue that many have had was severe quiet, like full blast sounded like somebody was sitting in the backseat with headphones turned all the way up, so that doesn't sound like it's your problem.

Check the sound leveling adjustment between sources. It's possible that it was done when the unit was in your BMW, but those settings were lost when you swapped vehicles.

From the manual:
Adjusting source levels
Source Level (source level adjustment) lets you
adjust the volume level of each source to prevent
radical changes in volume when switching
between sources.
❒ Settings are based on the FM tuner volume
level, which remains unchanged.
1 Compare the FM tuner volume level with
the level of the source you wish to adjust.
2 Touch [Source Level] in the Audio Settings
menu.
3 Touch [+] or [–] to adjust the source volume.
+8 to –8 is displayed as the source volume is
increased or decreased.
Sources are set to same source level adjustment
volume automatically.
• CD and ROM (MP3)
• XM and SIRIUS
• EXT 1 and EXT 2
• AUX and AV INPUT

I tried that with the DVD source, but it didn't change any. Since the FM volume is low, I will have to find another solution. I wonder if my ground is very secure, although, I am unsure that it would would cause this problem.

Here's something to consider - is the FM quiet because of poor reception?

Our car uses an antenna amplifier, so if you didn't connect the antenna amp to the Z2's power antenna wire, that could be causing the quiet FM/AM.

That doesn't account for the quiet DVD though.

I'm getting a feeling that this may be related to a botched re-creation of a bypass for the DVD to play while driving. If you've got your mute inadvertently connected to your power antenna/antenna amp wire, then when it powers up the antenna amp (FM, AM) it's causing the system to mute, and when it tries to do things that the bypass would be active for (DVD) then it is similarly attenuated. When your system is doing neither of those things - CD, Library, sound output is normal.

The FM reception is quite clear. I have the remote wire hooked up correctly.

As for the bypass, it is the same set up as in the previous car. The parking brake is grounded as well as the wire running in the additional slot indicated on the bypass instructions. Unless again the ground isn't secure.

As for the SAT issues, is it possible to have a bad cable? I am not sure why I would get sound through only one set of speakers.

Could be a bad ground or cable, but I'm still trying to think of a reason why the volume would be so far off.

You might want to jump on avic411.com and see what those guys have to say, since it appears everything is connected correctly, so it's something with the headunit itself.

The SAT is something wrong with the Ip-Bus cable. I plugged the ipod cable directly to the back of the unit and it works. So either the cable or the box, I will start with the cable.

I am still unsure about the quietness of some of the sources, the iPod AUX source is incredibly loud.

I think maybe the Head Unit and the Stock Bose Amp/Speakers are not playing nicely in terms of sound output. Do you think I would see an increase in sound if I installed an older 4 channel Kenwood Amp that I had in my old Supra? It is a pretty nice amp as far as I know.

Another thought. I was going to install the PAC SWI, but I ran out of time. Currently, the wires are spliced into the head unit wire (the power and ground) but I never spliced into the wheel controls, not sure if this would make any difference.

Nah, shouldn't make a difference.

Problem with installing the 4-channel amp however, is that you need six channels for the coupe, and 5 channels for the sedan.

You could always connect a multimeter up to see if the voltage output on the audio outputs on your headunit is changing drastically based on the source.

I am pulling the dash apart again soon to see maybe if there is a lose ground. If I can't get it to work right, I will put an Eclipse DD head unit I have and see if that works.

Good luck.

If you can, while it's apart, photo the way you've got the harness wired up. Might help clear up the cause.

A few addition things. Do you think using the ROEM-NIS2 would allow me to increase the levels of sound? I hear it works better sometimes in the G35.

If I decide to replace the factory amp, could I use the 4 channel amp and just purchase a 2 channel amp as well? I have a Sedan.
