Quick Dash removal Q

I have seen in a variety of DIY's those who simply remove the plastic piece in front of the DIN for factory integration Ipod install and those who remove the whole unit like for the double DIN installation. What is necessary? Do I have to open both sides of the center console and take the clock screw out and all that or should I be able to pull on the plastic face plate and get it off. I really don't want to break anything!

Thanks
EDIT: 04 6MT BTW

the sides have tabs that lock onto the dd trim piece from the sides so it would be best to remove the sides to pull the trim out. you'll also need to remove the shifter trim and the clock trim so basically everything,if you want to do it correctly.
