Hard Wiring a Valentine!

Okay, so I hard wired the Valentine to my passenger side Cig lighter and the cable is running along the back of the dashboard and down the side of the weather stripping..it looks really nice, but I can't get the damn wire to stay behind the dashboard..It's keeps coming out to play..lol..if anyone has done it this way, how the hell did the wire stay back there?? I am about to tape it back there.

Was about to order a V1, just wanted to know how you like it?
Is it a pain to install? Thanks

Re: Hard Wiring a Valentine!

Why did you hardwire it to the cig lighter? I installed mine with RJ11 telephone connectors and tucked it into the trim alongside the window. You cannot see anything ....

I did run a rj-11 to the connector, but I had to tap into a power source to give it power, so I used the cig lighter. Some people used the Auto dimming mirror for that. As for installation, It was pretty easy. Just a matter of removing the lower half of the glove box and the side panel of the head unit where the extra power outlet is. I wil show pics if you want later when I get home.

Re: Hard Wiring a Valentine!

Did you really have to remove the glove box and the kick panel to get to the auxillary power outlet wires?

Did you look at any of the fuses? I read in another thread that there is a +12v fuse slot next to the fuse for the cigarette lighter but that none of the fuses are "switched". Did you find this to be so?

Do I need an FSM to figure out how to remove the glove box and kick panel or do you have enough pictures/instructions that are detailed enough for someone who is not "Electrically Challenged" but not an electrician?

I've had the V1 remote for some weeks now but the idea of me trying to crawl into the passenger footwell in order to hardwire the V1 and connect the remote is laughable.

Re: Hard Wiring a Valentine!

Your all making this job too complex. Its not that difficult. The G35 has several empty (Extra) fuse spaces in the panel on the drivers side kick panel. You can tap your power into one of those fuses and there are even fuse spaces that are switched. In other words, your V1 will only have power when the key is on (just what you want). There is plenty of room for the Valentine connector in that area and there is even a easy ground right by the panel, not to mention it leaves your connector very accessable. Actually there are a few ground points. Next is the wire. Grab the trim piece on the drivers side A pillar and pull it straight out. It comes right off and pops right back on. Its real easy to run the wire down to the fuse panel by slipping it between the edge of the dashboard and the the drivers side door opening. Next is the headliner run which is also very simple. You need to drop the driver's side sun visor. Pop off the plastic cover with a screwdriver and there are two phillips screws there. Remove the screws and you can pull down the headliner enough to tuck the wire underneath it so that it will never come out or be seen again. Then simply screw in the visor, pop in the plastic cover and your done. Now to confirm which empty fuse holder your going to use, try a test light or volt meter and see which one meets your needs. There are six empty fuse locations and one of them will work. You even have a few spare fuses in the panel so you don't to worry about going to the store and buying a fuse. Finally, I taped the extra V1 fuse to the inside of the fuse panel cover so in case I do ever need to replace the buss fuse in my V1, its always right there.

Hope this helps and keeps others from cutting up or into their vehicle wiring harness. With the sophistication of the power system in this car (check the service manual) its not a good idea to tap into systems (although the cigarette lighter or power plug should not be a problem).

Good Luck

Re: Hard Wiring a Valentine!

Pearlwhite,
When you say there are extra slots in the fuse panel do you mean that there is no fuse in the slot? How do you make the connection? Shouldn't there be a fuse to prevent damaging the radar detector? How do you connect the wire to the slot with a fuse there?
Thanks,
Mario
