Ported Vs Sealed Enclosure

Hi All,

I'm a bit new to audio and only have a very basic knowledge of all the moving parts. I'm currently working on a setup for my coupe. With that I was originally looking at doing a Hertz Hi Energy 10" sub and doing the 4080 box. That is until i've heard from a couple friends that typically ported boxes produce a better sound... anybody have some input?

I don't like super punchy base nor do i like super boomy base. I listen to the whole spectrum of music but primarily listen to rap and hip hop. All advice would be appreciated, thanks!!

Rap and hip hop definitely should be done with a ported box.

i've read that ported boxes does produce better sound for rap and hip hop, is the difference that significant?

moreover, any suggestions on a good ported box? I was originally looking at the 4080 box cause everyone seems to agree that it's a quality product.. but i havent had any luck finding a ported box that saves space or isn't smack in the middle of the trunk like the 4080

Sealed enclosures maintain tight, deep bass while ported boxes have deeper ranges if the port is built properly and tuned. Thats right, it needs tuned. If you are building a box, make sure you look up the specs or read up on building boxes. Placement of ported or sealed boxes in a car can also effect its over all sound and how the base sounds as well.

You can have great quality bass with either set up if done properly. I used to install and had stereos in my car for both SPL or sound quality.

Today, I use a Free air sub so it doesnt take up a lot of space or weight and go for sound quality.

The reason there's nothing tuned that is formed to the trunk like the 4080 box is that each box has to be tuned to the woofer, so you can find generic ported boxes that come with a woofer that aren't molded to the car at all, but tuned, or you have to go all-custom to get one built to the woofer and trunk that you want.

It depends on a few things (several actually, but here's a few). What kind of music you listen to, how much room do you want to take up, what kind/watt amp you gonna be pushing it. Most sealed subs will be fine for just about anyone. Unless you are going to be showing and competing, you can keep it simple and still achieve your goal. Like others have mentioned before, do a little research on enclosures, ports, passive radiators, freeairs, air space, frequency response and resonance. Since this is going into a trunk which will be baffled by your rear seat, you can get away w/ just about anything. However, if you end up w/ a ported enclosure, be careful of port location, driver direction (this could go w/ ported or sealed), because your sub will sound differently with your trunk full of stuff than it will empty.
Hope that helps a little,

I always try to go ported. Best advice i got regarding ported boxes came from the owner of JBL

When going with a ported box, go as big as you can, tune as low as you can, and EQ out the peak (if there is one.) Also poly-stuff the box at up to ~1.25lbs of stuffing per cubic foot, which will effectively lower the port tune a bit more.

I'm thinking of building a ported box and glass over it to fit the contours of the trunk... Never glassed before though. We will see how it goes
