"Good enough" solution to the 05-07 DD kit?
A full climate control board? Not easy in the least. There's a reason there's only ONE aftermarket option for the climate control. If you know a good electrical engineer and programmer, it's possible, but not worth it.
A custom board that relays to the metra board, not bad at all. Most of my issues with using the board like I did was all the existing PCB connections. Had I started with a blank piece of plastic and mounted the buttons to it, it would have been much easier. If you'e trying to relay to the factory board, you would run into problems with the physical placement of the old board and the rotary temperature control. OEM temperature is controlled with a rotary encoder, not simple on/off momentary pushbuttons like the Metra board is. If you remove the rotary encoder, mount it, and extended all its wires, it may be possible though.
I never really considered running extensions from the OEM board, mostly because that board is frequently inoperable when the radio goes out.

You need a total of 13 buttons to press to map all the factory functions - that's including temp up/down. Including the temp **** for up/down, that one gives you 10.
