Different location for tweeters?

Hey Everybody,

I'm gettting ready to install speakers in my coupe and was wondering about using a different tweeter than stock.

I've never been a big fan of where the stock tweeters are mounted and am thinking of either putting the new ones by the front speakers in the door or maybe down in the kick panel.

My last stereo had the speakers in custom panels by the kick panels with the tweeters angled across the front. Despite being down low, the imaging was great and wide.

The stock location has them up high, but they are separated from the midrange speakers by quite a distance and seem like they're pointing forward and down towards the dash.

The speakers I'm installing are Focal 165 V2's whose tweeters don't swivel so I'm worried about the door sill mount.

If anyone has mounted their tweeters in a better location I'd be interested in learning about your experience and how you like the sound.

Kicks

Gizmo - Put a set of components ( 6.5" mid + 1" tweet ) in some custom kicks & U'll love the soundstage. I have Utopias in my kicks & I replaced the A-pillar tweet with another Utopia but attenuated the power so that it just brings the soundstage up to ear level but doesn't overpower you. I have a G35 but the principle's the same. Good luck!

Gene

I don't know if this applies, but I just changed the angle of the tweets in the stock location and it really opened it up... I was going to purchase some separates but decided to try this first...

For anyone interested, I simply removed the tweeter/bracket assembly and bent the bracket so the tweeter aims back... There is a plastic post on the bottom next to the screw-hole and so I have the bracket resting on that... So basically the tweeter is now facing rearward about 30 degrees more than before, and slightly upward... I was previously running my Treble setting at +5, and wishing for more, now I'm running at +4 and considering running at +3... This seems to be what was lacking... Previously I would have thought the sounds was coming from 1' in from the edges of the windshield, now it sounds definitely past the outter edges of the mirrors...

FWIW...

Rising Sun,
I had thought that might be an option, but I didn't know how much room I'll have with the Focal tweeters. I'll have to see when the car is apart. If there's room, I think I'll try pointing the tweeters back first and maybe that'll give me what I'm looking for.

Audioman,
Nice stereo install! How do you like the Morels? Are you happy with the tweeters where they are? If I do put min in the kick panels, I was hoping to flush mount them so I wouldn't have to worry about accidentally kicking them. I haven't taken off the plastic panel though, so I don't know how much room is available. I suspect that the driver side might have a bunch of wires from the fuse panel that would interfere. I'll probably just have the stereo guys move them around a little during the install and see what position I like the best.
