Question Smart Key and Viper

hello,

i know that the most automatic g35's are equipped with the smart keys, unlock and lock from the door handle. And also start the car.

i want to put a Viper 5901 alarm/remote start system and i want know if I will lose those functions once it is installed.

I bought my car with a viper system, and for me I can't use the factory smart key. If I use the smart key to unlock the car, It will unlock the car physically but the viper alarm system goes off when I open the door. I have to always use the viper system.

I'm pretty sure there is a bypass of some sort (addition) you can add to the viper system to bypass that. Not positive.

I'm about to get the 5902 installed on my coupe.

DEI alarm systems don't offer external arm/disarm functions. Other alarm systems do. If you want to be able to retain your OEM keyless entry I would look in to a different brand of alarm.

I have one on mine.. The best way to think of it is...

(if you understand what KPierson is saying, if you do read pass this)
Think of your OEM alarm as the keys to your car and your Viper alarm as the home security system.. You can get unlock and lock the doors with the OEM remote but you cant disable the alarm.. But if you dont activate your alarm you can just unlock and lock your doors to get in..

So yes you loose the point of having a hands free system because you'll need to enable/disable the viper alarm with the viper remote.

Upside is that you can lock and unlock your car with the remote whether or not your viper alarm is activated it.. Example you can just hand the valet the keys without giving him the viper alarm to mess with (or loose / dmg the remote). Just make sure you dont hit lock out of habit lol.

So I went today to an alarm shop to get myself a little more info on this. I was looking into the 5901 viper. They quoted me about $650. $599 on the alarm and install and another $50 on a module or something like that? They also said another $50 to add leds to show the alarm a little more if i wanted. Does that seem like a fair price and are the extra leds to the corner of the windshield or behind the rearview worth it?

They also said it would cost about another $100 if i wanted them to wire up the windows up/down to the viper remote. Didnt go into detail about how they do it but said ot would be extra work. Just wondering if other guys got this feature included for free or paid. Because its not worth it to me for $100.

They said i would still have to carry both remotes. Is that true? Not to interested in that so if i get it done i may just carry the key itself.

Last question, do you guys have to hit the brake to turn off the car then restart it?

Thanks for any help guys. Just trying to make an informed decision before i spend that kind of money. Btw the shop has an A+ BBB rating and has been in business over 20 years.

Price is fair. But I installed my 1 mile range one when it first came out (like 3 years ago maybe longer).

Yes it is worth it, it tells someone that you have an aftermarket alarm. Possibly a good one and they may think twice before breaking in.

No you wouldnt need your OEM remote anymore. Yes if you step on the brake before inserting your key it'll turn the engine off...

You can also turn the car off via remote after you've started.. You can also set how long it stays running without the key.

I know I've seen threads on this topic where an aftermarket starter (and I believe alarm as well) is tied into the factory smart key. I certainly wouldn't want to deal with 2 remotes so that would be the only way I'd do it. Take KPierson's advice and look for a shop that sells something other than the plethora of DEI brands.

^ You can do that but the range is limited to what the OEM system can do.. I believe the 5901 is 1mile range.

I just got a 5902 installed in my car, I dont have intelligent key since its a 6mt. One remote to rule them all.

If you have the coupe you cannot get the window automation kit because the coupe windows roll down a 1/4 of the inch when you open the door, and roll up when the door is close. Since that feature is there you cannot use window automation kit.

However the car has something called "creature comforts" which allows you to roll up and down the window by using the key in your door (by holding in the lock or unlock position). Your installer should be able to figure out how to wire it so you can use the window up and down feature from your remote without the window automation kit.

I wouldn't need the remote. Just the key correct? The viper remote couldn't simulate a ikey?

And he said I have to turn off the engine and restart before I can drivee off. Can't just get in, turn tumbler and go. Something along the lines that u have to kill remote start first. Thought I read in another thread it wasn't necessary. May have been with a different brand tho. Notsure

^ O.o

You CAN drive off just put the key in WITHOUT stepping on the brake.. once you step on the brake without the key in it'll kill the engine.

Technically speaking you can just make an on off switch in place of the key.. If you wish to get rid of the key completely. you'll just need to have one in the dash to detect the chip... But that also means if someone breaks into your car they can drive off with it by pushing the button
