Alarm Systems - What do you guys have/recommend?
Alarm Systems - What do you guys have/recommend?
Just wondering what band/model alarm systems you guys have on your rides, and how you like them. I am thinking of getting the top of the line clifford, the Matrix RSX 3.5. Can we use the remote start with our 6mt? or is it dangerous, like leaving it in gear the night b4? Let me know your feedback, thx
I have a Viper 791XV (Which is the SAME exact model as the Clifford since they are both owned by DEI now) I've heard alot of places won't do remote start on a 6mt for that very reason.
Leave it in gear AND remote start it? I'm sure you don't mean both at the same time!
Installing a remote start on the 6mt isn't that dangerous if it is done right. Our trannys are actually set up for it. If you were to ever put your car in N and rev it up the car will only rev so high. It has a no load rev limiter on it. The ECU 'knows' when the car is in N because there is a signal from the tranny sent to the ECU telling the ECU that the tranny is in N. This signal can be used to integrate any remote start on the 6MT and it will only start when the car is in gear. As an added safety measure it is possible to use the reverse lights as a shutdown for the remote start. This of course will only work if you leave the car in reverse EVERY time you leave it in gear. With both safteys hooked up if the first should fail (the N switch in the tranny) as soon as the car is turned on (ignition is always turned on before the starter is cranked) the reverse lights (if the car is in reverse) will come on and this signal can be used as a shutdown to the system.
The only problem is finding a shop that will agree to hook these things up for you

yeah i have to park and leave my car at school, work, and outside at night, so i definatly want one of those LCD screen remotes, like the clifford. Aside from remote start, are all the high end systems pretty much the same when it comes to....well, security? Also, i want one that circulates microwaves throughout the interior of the vehicle for motion sensing, so i can leave my windows cracked, ect, ive seen them b4 any suggestions, thx guys

The LCD screens are nice, but we had many customers coming back because they either broke the remote or it stopped working. When we explained to them that the remotes had no warranty and the new ones were $100 they were usually pretty upset. The prox sensors work well, but can be a pain if you live in an area with 4 seaons. In Ohio we recomend have them set every summer and winter. They sensitivity of them changes with the weather and they can be a pain.
As long as you stick with a larger alarm manufactuer the alarms are all pretty much the same. DEI (viper) is the most reliable from my experiance and from what I've read. Last I hear the Clifford alarms weren't identical to the Viper alarms, but that may have changed.

The Viper 791 and the Clifford RSX are the same alarm, but some stuff like the Clifford Avantgaurd in still the original Clifford curcuitry that is better than the newer 791 and RSX. But most opt for the new ones because of the remote.
how is the 'clifford curcuitry' better then the Viper? My shop always hated installing cliffords and ended up dropping the line. I've never been a clifford fan at all. Viper is the only line I have worked with that worked consistanly every time. With Viper when something didn't work right you knew it wasn't installed correctly. Most other brands when something doesn't work right the first thing you do is swap out the brain.
We all have our own experiences and I can't change yours. I have always had good luck with both. You run into little things all time now and then but it comes with the territoriy. As far as advanced curcuitry the Avantgaurd has their G5 curcuitry that DEI claims is their most adavanced. And the Avantguard comes with alot of the extra bells and wistles you have to add to the 791/RSX.
how hard is a clifford or viper to install? I consider myself to be pretty good with auto electrical, i have installed many stereos and have 2 jl amps and 2 10s in my G that i put in myself, should i attemp this task?
I just had a Compustar 2W900FM installed on my Auto G. It's a great autostart/alarm, but becuase it doesn't monitor gear change I don't think it's what you'd want. In case anyone wanted to know it cost $500 for the unit and install at Speedworld on QueensBlvd. 3000 ft range.
They arn't too hard to install. But, no ones first alarm ends up looking very pretty. In order to install an alarm properly and to make it look profesionaly takes quite a bit of experiance. Its a totally different world then installing radios and amps. Nothing in the Gs/Zs is very difficult, except for the lock/unlock wires. They are only difficult because you have to run wires in to the drivers door to tap the right wires.
Oh, and a fairly thorough knowlege of relays will help out quite a bit.
