Oem Nav
Just wondering if a shop has installed the OEM Nav yet and if so what was the charge? If I purchase the Nav and harness is there any additional parts needed to do the install? Can the OEM NAV be bought from a dealer?
Josh..... IMO it's better to get an aftermarket NAV mounted in the upper NAV compartment. It can be done with minimum fuzz, bigger screen, faster processor, MP3, DVD etc. The stock NAV looks clean but it's very slow especially in the 3D browsing mode. The only thing you might possibly gain is the fuel consumption estimate and service menu display. It would also cost you a whole lot more to get OEM NAV vs custom aftermarket.
i agree with sukairain.
you could probably do the oem nav conversion, but it would probably cost more than you want to pay ($4k in parts would be my guess.. maybe $1k in labor if you have someone else do it?)
for that money you could do double din conversion and an avic-n1 conversion... with $2k+ to spare, so thats probably best for most people.

I make a conversion kit for the g35 for just this purpose. Check out http://www.digitalwheelz.com
It's not exactly OEM, but its about as close as you'll get in aftermarket and you can do a lot more with it for a lot cheaper.
If you really want the stock NAV, your probably best off trading your car in for one that already has NAV.
Someone on here amazingly enough did install the stock NAV with used parts from a junked g35. It was a very impressive feat, but it still cost 2k just for the parts and after that nothing navigation related will be covered under warranty if it breaks.

NAV Conversion kit for 2005 G35 Coupe
Hi god_of_cpu,
Any idea when (or if) you'll have something available for the 2005 model Coupe? Some of the NAV people out in the San Jose, CA area have suggested going with the Magellan 700, as it fits right in the space and could be removed. I'd personally prefer a system based on your product.
Thanks.

Someone has already successfully installed a DigitalWheelz screen in a 2005 model, however, it required some pretty major modification to the housing. Part of the sides have to be cut to allow the top cover to flip up and the latch for the magnet holder has to be mounted differently, but it can work and will fit. The only real problem is that the top cover sits higher then it use to so its not flush with the rest of the center console.
I am working on a new design that will fit the 2005's better, but if I do come out with a model specifically for the 2005's it probably won't be ready for sale for another 6 months or so. Since I don't have a 2005, I will need a prototype car or two. If you would be interested in being one of the first to install a digitalwheelz screen in your 2005, send an e-mail to admin@digitalwheelz.com You will recieve a $50 discount on any screen and the restocking fee will be waived so you can return it if it doesn't work as expected.

No, I don't currently offer any package deals. I will be offering a full carputer product within the next 6 months that will support NAV, music, and videos among other things and work more like a high performance head unit then a PC, but I have no plans to offer any other stand alone packages.

Are you referring to the OEM installed Nav fuel consumption? Mine seems to always be close, although I've never actually calcualted it. The factory NAV offers a lot of cool things that an aftermarket won't add - like visual VDC warnins when you totally lose control of your car, Air bag warnings after they deploy, trunk open indicator, Oil change and service reminders, and Too Cold To Operate notifications!
If it werne't for my NAV telling me my air bags deployed I might not have even realized it (/sarcasm)

Your conversion looks awsome!!!! I saw your price for the basic DVD/NAV screen. I was wondering what DVD player and NAV system you recommend using in the G? I would be interested in mounting the DVD player in the upper glove box, if possible. And how does the NAV work if you have no buttons or touchscreen? Remote? Also, I would want to use the device to hook the sound up to the stock system, non FM emitting signal one. How much are those? Im trying to get a total price on all of this so I can start saving. Forgive the ignorance, Im new to this sceen. Oh yeah, PM me if you dont want to broadcast your opinions.
Thanks a million!!!
I use a carputer for NAV in my own car and have not used many aftermarket nav systems so I can't say which one is better over another. Yes, if your going with remote mount headunits, the only way to control them is by remote control or voice, the touchscreen is only good for PCs.
To get your audio into your stock BOSE head unit, you will need a PAC Audio AAI-NIS ~$90. I don't sell these, but other people on this forum do, they can also be found for sale online fairly easily.
If you want to put a DVD in the upper glovebox it's depth should conservatively be no more the 6 1/2", you can probably fit something as deep as 7" with a bit of luck, force, and possibly some cutting of the DVD housing. See this page http://www.digitalwheelz.com/G35DinConverter_Fit.htm for complete details on what will fit. The boss audio 2800 DVD player is garunteed to fit.
Without NAV, a DVD / MP3 system should cost you just over $600, $90 for AAI-NIS, $100 for DVD player, $428 for DigitalWheelz screen and DIN converter. Most good remote mount NAV systems seem to come in around $1000 on top of that. The FAQ should answer any other questions you may have: http://www.digitalwheelz.com/G35ScreenHousing_FAQ.html

Thanks for all the info god of cpu.
You said you use a carputer. I am assuming that this is a computer for the car. Where do you have it mounted? How big is it and what else can you use it for? Cost?
Thanks again

This is what I'm waiting for...
My birthday is in July. So, the timing should be nearly perfect...
