Hard Wiring Ipod!?
Hard Wiring Ipod!?
Hey all,
I am about to do my system install (as soon as the DD Finishers come in) and I am adding my Ipod to my system. I will be running the music through the "cd" input from my after-market HU (there is a adapter that makes ends with RCA plugs). I am thinking about doing something in the Nav spot!?
Here is my question, how do I hard wire the ipod for power? All the car options seem to have a cigarette conection for power.
Also, if I don't instal a dock, is the only way to get sound out from the top "headphone" jack? I read somewhere it is better to get the sound out from the bottom, by way of a dock or through a item like the Sendstaion Pocket Dock, because it bypasses the headphone amplifier giving you the best quality sound output?!
Any help would be great.

ice>Link v1.1 for iPod
Thanks, I have seen that link, but he is using a dock and using the cigarette lighter!
Can I use the Ice.Link if I am using a aftermarket HU?

I'd recommend that you don't hardwire your ipod for power. I've installed one in my car and thought about it for a while and decided against for several reasons. The recharchable battery only has so many charging cycles in it before you have to send it back to be replaced. The ipods are known to have poor rechargable batteries and have been known to go bad in less than 1 year. It doesn't matter if you charge your battery for 5 minutes or 5 hours to count as a cycle. Most of the time you listen to your ipod in your car it will be for way less than the 10-14 hours you're supposed to get from a full charge so you should never run out of battery power.
You could always get a plug-in charger to keep in your car if you're worried about a dead battery but then again you could just turn on a cd or the radio to get you home.

Sorry millions ways to go...
So any time you "dock" or at work when I "mini dock" (power cord to the adapter to plug in the bottom) and then run headphones to a RCA "y" output to a stereo... it's charging?! I thought if it was being powered by a outside source it was over ridding the battery.
So, if I want to "hardwire" just for sound from the bottom of the Ipod, not using the headphone jack, and not worring about power all the time (I can car charger it when needed) what cable or connection should I use?
Thanks, Tim!

If you charge your ipod only half way it counts as a half of a cycle not 1 cycle. the cycles are based on how much you charge it not just pluging it in.

toyz, im a little confused with what you want to do.
if all you want is sound, then all you have to do is plug the 'y' adapter from the line out of the DOCK not the headphone out -THE SOUND IS BETTER FROM THE LINE OUT OF THE DOCK. you dont really need to install a cig lghter adapter ( that would go from the cig lighter to the dock ). there is NO hardwire for POWER, just the cig adapter.
i installed with NO cig adapter for power, just the 'y' adapter to the PAC unit and then to the stock HU.
HOWEVER, you stated that you wanted to use the ICELINK, which is NOT compatible with our stock HU's. thus leaving you no choice but use the ICELINK which PROVIDES POWER AND AUDIO.

Sorry if I sound confused... I am a little. I am trying not to have to use a dock, because i am not sure I like any of the otions I see. I don't want to give up my cup holders. So that being said I am trying to see whats best for sound and installations. I see cables being used with out a dock, but they seem to all conect to a ciarette light attachment... wich means it is charging.
What I am sure of... I am replacing the HU and I want to hook up my ipod. I want the best sound and I can go either way with "power".
On the ice<Link, it was something I came across in my investigation after I made this post, but I don't know if it will work with my HU. It does have list of compatible HU's, but it's not specific.
So I am seeing what other peoples ideas are... isn't that the resons for the Forums?!
