Are there higher resolution in-dash navigation headunits available or coming out soon?

All I could find were 800X480 TFT/VGA/LCD ones.

What do you guys think is the BEST headunit coming out soon?

Also are there any headunits that give car info like the stock navigation units (mpg, miles to empty, etc...)? I could've sworn I saw something from Pioneer a while back...

 

Considering that most GUIs for use while driving are going to be very simplistic, there's nothing to gain with a high-resolution screen. 800x480 on a 7" screen is about 145 pixels per inch. That's roughly half the PPI of very high-res "retina" displays on phones, and since your screen is twice the distance from you that the phone is, any higher resolution would wasted on a screen that size viewed from that distance.

Unless you mount the radio a foot from your face, you're not going to see any more detail with a much higher resolution screen.

Any radio that gives estimated miles to empty is going entirely by numbers you punch in manually, since they don't communicate with the gas gauge or sensors to know current fuel flow rates.

As far as best radios, depends on what you want - navigation, iPhone stuff, Android stuff... I'm liking the Parrot Asteroid Smart, Pioneer 8500BHS, Pioneer AppRadio2 and the older Pioneer Z130BH.

 

The Parrot is pretty sweet, never saw that before. Still loving my Z130 but hmmm

 

I was asking about resolution mainly for watching dvd (why dont they have bluray in-dash yet?!?!) or youtube HD videos if theres any way to watch those when the Iphone is plugged in.

I'm looking mainly for best navigation but also iphone support is helpful.

I'm thinking about Pioneer x940 (I like the **** better than the x950 without ****). Any reason why I should consider Kenwood over the Pioneer?

Also saw that Alpine is getting in the in-dash navi business, and I know theyre sound is top notch but not sure about their navi head-units

 

800x480 is greater than the resolution of a DVD.

They don't have blu-ray in-dash because the same reason nobody makes CD changers any more. Digital storage via USB or a mobile video device is more space efficient, convenient and the screen size and viewing distance makes the higher resolution of a blu-ray disc irrelevant at the 7 inch in-dash screen. If you want to install a screen big enough to make use of that resolution, you're looking at a flatscreen in the trunk, in which case, putting in a blu-ray player is the least of your worries.

The composite video input on most headunits doesn't go over 480 anyway, so again, no HD videos that way. The 8400BHS has an HDMI input though.

Kenwood has superior navigation to Pioneer, but your phone has superior navigation to both, as does a standalone garmin, and a standalone garmin is cheaper to keep up to date.
