04 G35 Coupe - Replace OEM Navi screen with a double din??

I tried searching around for this and found this guy:
https://g35driver.com/forums/car-pc/...-progress.html

But I don't want a PC in there, I just want a decent double din, or maybe even a tablet. I want decent navigation that works. Ideally would hook into the sound system as well though.

The stock navigation is horrendous, only reason I wouldn't want to lose it is for MPG and trip computer but seriously, who cares. Takes 2 seconds to do the mental math.

I was thinking of even just taking the screen out and sticking a nexus 7 in there and using it as navi and hooking it up as an aux in instead of the satellite radio and keeping the rest of the bose system as the stock head unit.

Or even stick a double din in there instead of a nexus 7, is that doable, but then what would be the main headunit, and the bose would be redundant.

Main issue right now is I don't want to drop $400 on the double din JDM kit lol

What do you guys think?

Edit*

After thinking about this for more than 2 minutes, I highly doubt a nexus 7 will fit, even a 6" tablet will be pushing it with the casing/edging. Maybe a Samsung Galaxy note, but then the screen will only be 5" :/

If anyone has any bright ideas please lmk

Thanks

One thing you need to check with any tablet or smartphone mount - make sure it isn't polarized opposite to your sunglasses. I know from testing it myself, the nexus 7 screen is 100% black if viewed in landscape mode through polarized sunglasses.

If you look in some of those carPC discussions you'll see my take on it - the tablet doesn't really do anything unique. A decent DDin radio combined with a smartphone will have all the streaming audio, video and navigation options you'd get from a tablet. The DDin radio also has an interface that is optimized for driving, rather than one that works while sitting stationary on a sofa. Unless you get a separate data plan for your tablet, you'll still be carrying your smartphone for tethering anyway, soo... why not just use the smartphone?

One thing I'm going to do once the weather cools off, is to turn the pop-up nav screen into a mount for my smartphone, which will just bluetooth-stream audio to the headunit. There are bluetooth auxiliary input adapters available that will connect to the factory radio (see this thread: https://g35driver.com/forums/audio-v...-function.html) so you could do similar without replacing the radio.

Ya, after looking into it more doesn't seem like a good idea.

That is what ill probably do (the bluetooth input) for now.

Thanks a lot
