sub setup for image dynamics idq12
sub setup for image dynamics idq12
hey guys. This is my situation. Im currently running an Alpine type r 8 (ported enclosure made by alpine) in my sedan. Almost immediately I felt it might not be enough output. my fronts (jbl ms62c) are not great in the midbass dept either so my system is lacking in that area. Recently, I picked up an Image Dynamics IDQ12v3 which I plan throw in the back. Here's my question, would you:
1. build an MDF enclosure to spec to fit against back seat?
2. build a fiberglass enclosure for behind wheel well ( like the 4080)
3. or, infinite baffle firing through ski pass.
I lean towards IB. seems easy to install, retains the most trunk space, less power required ( I'm running 500 RMS).
only concern here is the ski pass hole is pretty small compared to sub. don't know how this will affect sound. ???
btw, this sub requires very little air volume ( .70-1.0 cubic ft.)
all opinions welcome. thnx guys

[QUOTE=WhosUrBuddiee;6856360]3 would be by far the worst idea. Best would be to follow IDs suggested enclosure info and get a 1.5 cu ft ported enclosure, tuned to 34Hz.
Google is your friend.[/QUO
Can you further explain your comment. Most of my "search" suggested IB would actually sound pretty good with decent output. Believe me i do search, and lots of it, before any decision regarding my car. I just wanted a more g35 community specific point of view. Thnx for replying. Btw, IDQ12v3 is optimized in a sealed enclosure .7 to 1.0 .

I said ported not sealed. Yes sealed produces the best cleanest bass, but majority of people want punch. I went ahead and assumed you are not an audiofile since you were asking this quesiton. Sealed will restrict cone movement, while ported produces a higher dB. Ported boxes have a set frequency based on length of the port. The general concensous on best frequency is low 30s to get the best trade off between dBs and sq. 32-34Hz will be the sweet spot.
I guess Im not being clear about my objective for this project. my apologies. I chose the IDQ for its small enclosure requirements and IB capability. Im trying to maximize trunk space, first and foremost. you are correct in that im no audiophile, in fact, Im pretty new to the car audio world. But sound quality is at the top of my list not so much spl. My sub should sound great in any .of the above mentioned configurations. Now, can you explain why you shot down IB. Do you have any experience with this setup in our cars? Dont like the sq or is it a pain to build?
I didnt shoot down IB, I provided you with info directly off their website. I have experience with many setups in many cars, bass is like boost, everyone starts low and ends up wanting more. I always perfer sq in my personal builds. Even in my Jeep Wranglers, I have a full Focal sq setup. But most people look for that trade off between dB, sq, and price.
You didnt post the info of what you were really trying to achieve, so I went with the most popular route. If you really want trunk space, best bet it to take out spare and do a hidden sub. (Most trunk space) 2nd best for trunk space would be a simple 4080 enclosure. Either sealed with proper dimensions and sound deadening would sound good.

ID stuff works best IB.
..but
With an IB setup, Cone area is king. You'll gain output down low tremendously, but probably lose it up top.
With 12's, you'd want 2 at the minimum.
Give it a shot, though.
Wrong. Very very wrong.
IB>Ported>sealed.
Sealed the most inefficient alignment to go with.
Only pro is space savings.

Eggyhustle, thank you. i will take your advice into consideration but I honestly don't see me dropping another $200+ for another IDQ. Right now I'm not exactly sure what to do. A sealed enclosure would be easy for me. I'm pretty skilled woodworker and have the tools. Also, an enclosure can be removed if need be quite easily. I really need to get some feedback from someone who's done IB in a G and can give me some pointers or ideas. I would like to tackle it this weekend. thnx for replies guys.
Yep. Thats what i was thinking as well. Either a small baffle like the lexus pics above or 1 long board across the back wall. Got to figure out to make it look decent too. Might have to remove that piece of trunk liner. Idk. Oh one more question, would it be necessary to seal up the deck holes. I removed the stock sub a while back. Thnx eggyhustles.
Build a long board accross the seat back
Use this to seal up all holes on the rear deck

You gotta seal up that whole for the stock sub, too.
Look at this install for tips

That link is exactly what i was looking for to get me started. Now im quite certain this is doable in the G. The only thing I think ill do different is instead of L brackets ill attach wood cleats to the sides using heavy duty construction adhesive . then I could screw the baffle board to the cleats and seal the edges with CLD. Thnx so much my friend
