Security w\ remote start

Well, I think I'm going to need some advice here. I want to get an alarm system with remote start for my '04 6MT. I've read little bits and pieces on here about a Neutral Saftey Switch near the ECU, ways to bypass the immobilizer and other helpful hints, but nothing real definitive. Could I get some hard facts that I could pass on to my install shop about these things?

Thanks in advance!
-Chris

I plan on it, but not many shops have done or will do installs on a G35 MT. Just trying to get the best information so I can pass it on to the shop that's going to do it. I don't trust shops to always do the best set-up without asking them to do things a certain way.

What do you want to know? I've never actually installed one on a G35 but I know an awful lot about it...

What's the deal with the neutral saftey switch? I just had the top of the line Compustar installed. It's set up so when I put it in neutral, pull the parking brake and leave the car, it will remote start as long as nothing changes (ie unlocking the doors, rolling the windows down ect). From what I understand, the G35 has a neutral safety switch that would keep it from from starting in gear (when set up properly). If that's the case, then I wouldn't have to worry about having the maual transmission set-up on my alarm. In essence, I could run out to my car during the day and gt something out of it without having to re-do the remote start requirements for this alarm. Do you have any more info on this?

Yeah, the switch is there, I've found the wire going to the ECU in my car. The ECU is right under the passenger side dash above the plastic panel.

The wire goes to (-) when the tranny is in neutral. The actual switch is mounted in the tranny, right next to the reverse switch (that tells your reverse ligthts to turn on). This is all detailed in the service manual under PNP Switch.

Do you have a pic of that section in the manual? It would be greatly appricaited! (or anyone for that matter)

How would I use this wire to protect my vehicle in remote start? Does it have to be wired into the remote start module? Do you have a wiring diag?

Sorry for all the questions =)

'04 Coupe. Thank you for your help BTW.

***edit***Never mind! I just found the sticky on g35frenzy with the manual downloads. I just printed out the wiring diag for the PNP switch and faxed it to my install shop. The owner\installer said it was perfect. If it works how it's supposed to, then he'll allow it. If it doesn't he's going to return my Compustar back to it's original set up. I have no doubt this will work flawlessly though. Thanks for your efforts! Your posts on different forums allowed me to realize this was even a viable option.

Cool that you found it. Here is a link that describes it and its location: https://g35driver.com/forums/engine-drivetrain-forced-induction/18467-remote-starts-neutral-safety-switch.html

Trust me, it does work. I've never hooked up a remote start in a G35 BUT I have found this wire in my car and investigated it. Also, several other people have used this signal before with no issues.

The only thing I will warn you of is that this is a mechanical switch, and mecahnical switche do wear out over time (very unlikely though). I would recomend once a month putting your car in gear WHILE YOU ARE IN IT and trying to remote start it just to make sure the safety feature works.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks again Kevin. I don't feel that it will ever be an issue. I always park my car in neutral anyways (unless I'm parking on a hill). My installer said he would consider it due to the fact that this is a true neutral safety switch, but setting the system up this way is ilegal. I'm not sure I care, but is that true?

The first thing you need to know is its not how YOU leave your car, most accidents are caused by someone else NOT leaving the car in N.

2nd, I have never heard of a LAW to prevent this. Its a liability thing, insurance reasons that lead shops to not mess with it. I don't think anyone will give you a ticket or a fine if you have a remote start installed. About the only negative thing that could happen is that your installer could be held liable if something bad were to happen, or could be fired if his manager doesn't want him to ever install remote starts on 6MT.

Fortunately, the installer I'm dealing with is also the owner of his shop. We had a lenthy discussion about liability, and he seems to be comfortable with me. We've come to the understranding that he installed the remote start the way it was supposed to be, but I did the extra modifications to it. I have no problem operating under that premise.

Sounds good to me! I would have no issues installing one of these on my own personal car.

Well, just to give you an update:
I had them wire the remote start with the use of the neutral safety switch. They disabled the "chain of events" system that the compustar uses to allow a RS on a MT. Works PERFECTLY. Thanks again for your help and input Kevin!
