I mounted my V-1 in exactly the same place as yours, but instead of the suction cups, I made a small bracket out of sheet metal that fits into the slot on the visor mount. It's about 1 inch wide by 2 1/4 inches long, the strip being bent into a "V" 1 in. from the end. A small depression is made to fit with the pressure tab on the mount for the V-1 to 'snick' into. Mount the remaining 1 1/4 in piece to your windshield, and voila, a secure mount for your V-1 that takes seconds to mount/ remove your RD! Cut a 2-3" piece of 1/4 inch hose tubing and wedge it into the liner trim to keep your power cord in place.
I've used this system for the last two cars that I owned and use the suction cups only for loaners/test drives.
BTW, I thought about mounting the remote display in the nav-screen cubby as well, but I find that the tach position is more in line-of-view to the road and there is only about 1 inch of wire showing. Also no hole to drill through the cubby. Yours is a nice clean install though.

Gordgee...Is there any way that you can post pics of the mount that you made. Sounds like a good idea. I take my V1 down whenever I park somewhere I don't feel too comfortable in but it is a pain to have to keep resuctioning it. I can kind of visualize your setup but pics would be very helpful. Thanks for the info. As for the V1, I think its a great radar detector. Picks up on-patrol cops all the time. The only gripe I have with it is the amount of falses I get but living in Miami, I guess thats to be expected. Great on the expressway though! :-)

Yes, the V-1 is great! Mine is still the '98 model from right after they changed the display. My neighbour has an 8500, we traded and played. The 'expert' mode is interesting, but the display is too small to be useful at a glance and when it goes 'beep', you still wonder what the heck it's telling you. Couldn't get my V-1 back fast enough (he didn't want to give it back)!

The 8500 is a good detector, just doesn't give the info that I get from the V-1. Try the V-1 on their 30 day money-back and see if it's useful for you. Some don't like the V-1, but most haven't tried.

i just tonight, bought a Cobra 9210 radar detector. its very nice lookin and should work. i ahvent really tried it yet, but it blends in wit the car, looks good, and doesnt cost as much as the V1 and Escort. Ill post pics either tomrorow or thurs. All in all its nice

I finally got around to posting the V-1 mount on 'rides' page. Hope it helps. As I said, this way it only takes about 3 seconds to mount, and about 2 seconds to dismount your V-1, electrical connections and all!

Thanks a lot gordgee!! Thos pics are very helpful. It doesn't look too hard to fabricate so I am gonna try and do it. You seem to be quite the DIY guy. First the dead pedal and now this!!

 

You're welcome. Did you try the trick with the 1/4" hose tubing to keep your power cord in place? I did my V-1 install myself and didn't find it too hard, so anyone looking to save a few bucks might consider same. BTW nadz240, I posted a reminder to you re. the fog light bulb listings on FA.

Did you ever make the V-1 mount for your windshield?

I just fabricated a new V-1 mount from thicker sheet steel. I made it in 2 pieces to incorporate a more 'stylized' look to the angles and brazed them together, heat tempering the mount in the process. A depression is ground out to 'snick' into the V-1 visor plate. This makes for a very rigid permanent mount for the Valentine which no longer moves around at all. I have the auto dimming mirror I think I could attach the power to that same connector that the mirror power uses? What is the voltage requirements for the V-1, 12 volts? I will check the voltage of the power to the mirror.
