One way to tell if they're working on an 05+ would probably be the presence of a dip switch or jumper on the board. Metra uses the same board for 03-04 and 05+ and there's a simple jumper to toggle between the functionality of the two. It's unlikely that Scosche would use a different control board for the newer ones, so they'd go with a similar solution to toggle.
If there's no toggle, they'd have to program differently for the different year ranges, which is more expensive to do.

Here are some pictures of the Gun Metal trim kit that I received. As you can see the color is very different than the picture shown on Scosche's website. The color also varies depending on lighting.
NOTE: I paid $139.95 (with no sales tax + free ground shipping) for my Scosche trim kit from an online store called Pacific Stereo. If you search for the item on their website, you won't find it. But I found a direct link to the item:
https://www.pacificstereo.com/scosche-ii1652gmszb.html
You can subsitute "ii1652gmszb" for the specific trim kit model you're looking for. All the model numbers can be seen on the last picture below.

It's safe to say that the difference is only the plastic button for the DUAL function on the scosche kits, however, whether you can simply modify the button to press whatever's under the plastic exterior is unknown until somebody disassembles it.

Why not go to Pacific Stereo or Google the part numbers for the dual control units and get what you want? No need to limit yourself to Amazon.

I had the Metra kit but the AC controls were busted (even after the jumper fix and calling tech support. A shame because I wrapped it nicely in CF vinyl.
After seeing the pics of the Scoshe AC controls I just decided to return the metra.
I'll report back with pics.

UPDATE: I finished my installation last Friday. Pictures below show the Scosche "Gun Metal" trim installed with a Pioneer AVH-X490BS. I had previously purchased the PAC ROEM-NIS2 from Amazon but I ended up not using it. The wire harness + steering wheel control adapter that were included in the Scosche II1652 Trim Kit worked perfectly fine. I did use the Mᴇtra 40-NI10 antenna adapter purchased from Amazon. The entire installation process took just under 4 hours.
These pictures were taken before I realized that I had to extract a thin black plastic piece from the original trim and re-install it into the thin gap right above the new trim.
The color match between the "Gun Metal" trim and the original "Willow" color is not exact but pretty darn close. The climate control buttons are decent and the temperature dial **** has a high quality feel. Overall I am very happy with the results.
(Sorry about the Pacific Stereo link not working anymore. My online order might have alerted them that their pricing was way too low.)
