I recently went to a local car audio/video store in Atlanta. I asked for an estimate on placing a dvd player in the trunk and running wires to my factory NAVI system. I have read the sticky post about this and it seemed kinda simple but I know nothing about running wires, ect. They told me that it would be 1,650 for the total installation. This included 400 for labor, 200 for player, and 800 for a module(?). When I asked if an AV switch could be used to convert the video from DVD to Navi, ect, he said no. He said that it was neccessary to install a box because the Navigation system currently doesnt accept video feeds, or something like that. I want to get this done but I feel like that estimate was too much and unneccesary. I might end up attempting it myself but I am a little wary due to my lack of experience and lack of work area. What are your guy's views?

 

First off, WAY OVERPRICED! The module only costs about $400! It's from a company called AVElectronics and is available on eBay and is sold on the forums I believe. A DVD player you can get for about $80-$100 bucks on eBay. I recommend the Boss 2800 Dvd player and the DW single din converter (if you don't have anything up there in the top compartment, but I think the stock NAV player is there). Install shouldn't run more than $200 also! So total estimate of something like this is around $700, not $1600 so don't get your install done there!

 

What is this "module" they speak of? The AVelectronic box is what most people have used to get the DVD signal to their NAV screen. (An "A-B video switch" won't work.) They run less than $800. I think I paid around $500 for mine. $200 for a DVD player is not too far out of line, but you can get them for less if you look around. $400 for installation. Not unreasonable. You do have to disassemble part of your dash to get the AVelectronic box in and if you want your DVD in the trunk, that is some extra wire routing and interior disassembly.
Except for the $800 "module", the price does not sound suspect. BUT, you can do this yourself in an afternoon. I did mine and I have no car installation experience. There are several well done, easy to follow guides on this forum and plenty of people to offer assistance if you ask.

 

I agree - that is way to much! Ive got my AVelectronics converter for like 500 shipped, then a small dvd player for about 175...including the installation of screens in my headrests, the total cost for install of everything was under 300....

The module they were probably refering to is the NavTV piece which is expensive. The AV electronic, Nav with TV or NavBox units run much less. I agree with the $400 install for everything an a DVD installed in the trunk and $200 for the DVD player is not bad as long as it has last screen memory. But the NavTV module is way overpriced, but it should come down now that there is some competition. You should be able to get the whole thing done for $1000.
