Well, I have now had two shops tell me that a 4 ohm speaker in the front door will eventually burn up the Bose amp. I am doubting that but what do I know.

Regardless, a burned up Bose amp might be a blessing in disguise... hehe

It shouldn't burn out the amp. It's not doing that much more work.

I had my speakers installed in my sedan for 2 years with no issues whatsoever.

Both, I put in a set of Polk components, mids and tweets were both 4 ohms.

4 ohm speakers should draw less current, not more. I don't see how it could damage the amp. I don't know about the 3 db less volume? KPierson, don't you also need to incorporate the sensitivity of the speaker to estimate the resultant volume?

I also feel that the stock speakers are great for bass but have very muddy, washed out highs/mids. My Honda Odyssey has much superior highs/mids compared to the G35 - just a night and day difference. No bass - at all, but great high/mids - crystal clear. I would love to have that in the G35.

Thanks for the links SixFive - greatly appreciated!!!

Quick question - I've heard the Polk 3500 tweeter mentioned a bit in the forums and I understand that it needs to be "cut" to fit in the G35 coupe. Anyone done this here and can describe what needs to be done? Also, where to get tweeters alone (they appear to be sold as part of a component system on crutchfield etc). Any info on what "good" tweeter options will fit in the coupe?

(Too bad the images on the DIY are all broken - can a moderator fix this please so that we can attempt this mod ourselves??? I think the DIY guides by NYCG35 in particular were termendous - and are now useless without the images - moderators, please fix the links if possible - thanks in advance).

What I was told is that the resistance sent power back to the AMP and that was what would eventually burn it up.

That's like saying if you run an amp with no speakers connected to it (i.e. infinite resistance), you'll burn it up... Doesn't make any sense to me, but I'm willing to be educated...

Increasing resistance at any point, either in series or parallel, will decrease current draw and reduce the load on the amp. Am I missing something???
