Aftermarket HU and Navigation

Aftermarket HU and Navigation
Hey peeps, I have finally decided that I want to completly upgrade my "premium" Bose system. My question is does anyone know if it possible to keep the stock navigation system with an aftermarket headunit. They are different systems so I know that the navigation features will still work but what about the voice feature? WIll I lose it?
Also is it possible to get a single DIN sized radio and just have a an empty slot under the HU, or am I committed to getting a Double-DIN sized aftermarket headunit?
Thanks for the info

Yes, you can keep the stock NAV and change the headunit. You will lose the voice features unless you get a head unit that supports it.
Yes you can use a single DIN head unit with the double DIN converter.
Theres a few posts on here for doing both of those things that go into more details.

The stock Nav has two functions that integrate with the stock HU:
The first is the mute function. Most aftermarket HU's have a mute capability, but you may have to add a relay in order to make it compatible with the Nav's output. (details: the Nav provides a +12V signal for mute, while most aftermarket HU expect a connect to ground for this signal).
The second is the voice audio. This is a conventional line-level audio signal, but it's unlikely an aftermarket HU would support it while muted! So your solution is probably to install a small stand-alone amplifier/speaker. Here is one type from Radio Shack - motto: "You've got questions? We've got more questions."
