sorry for the amateur questions, but when it comes to car audio i'm at a loss, especially with the bose throwing everything off.
ok: i now have a jl audio 10w6 (older model, not the v2) and a MTX Thunder 302 from my old car. i've decided to stick with the sub and am considering chuckin the mtx 302 for a jl audio 250/1. is it really worth it? is the jl that much better than my mtx? keep in mind i am an audiophile when it comes to home audio, but for car i'm not as needy but i still have a good ear.
at some point i would like to toss everything bose, but since i just gave uncle sam $3 grand today it wont happen for a while.
thx in advance.

Since you are using the W6 (one of my favorite subs of all time btw), you would be wiring it as a 3 ohm load. So your amp selections should not be limited too much.
Now, my main concern is that with the MTX 302, you would be giving the sub about 300 watts @4ohms, if not more considering you are wiring it as a 3ohm load. I'm thinking that the sub would like closer to 250, but it shouldn't be a big deal. I'm not too familiar with that amp, so i'm not even sure if it is stable down below 4 ohms when bridged. As long as you are careful setting the gains though, you should be fine.
As far as whether an upgrade to the JL is worth it, I would say no. Granted the JL is a better amp, I don't think you would notice much of a difference between the two. Yes, the JL amp will probably control the sub better, and provide it with cleaner power. However, if I were deciding what to do, I would see how the MTX/W6 setup sounded first before switching amps.
You would notice a bigger difference by switching subs than you would switching amps. If you hear the setup, in the 4080 box, and you think the bass is sloppy, not loud enough, or lacking in some other way, then you should look into either changing the sub or amp. For now though, I say stick with what you got and see what you think after hearing it. Why spend money if you don't have to?
