steering controls / carputer setup

I'm trying to have a carputer set up in my car. I have the double din kit on my 03, my mini itx under the passenger seat, the monitor in dash (no stereo) and an amp under the glovebox. Is there a way to wire the steering wheel controls for basic functions like volume, power on-off?

I know about the joystick controls by god_of_cpu, but it's beyond what I need the controls for.

just thought of something

how about using a PAC-SWI X and an IR receiver for the PC? I think that might work. Opinions?

god_of_cpu's instructions are pretty much as simple as you can get

You can use an SWI-X with an IR reciever but that seems more complicated to me (and way more expensive)
