Heard from my friend that the dealer who sold him his G35 said that the stock navi does not play dvds...However, with a chip that you can install in the machine that holds the navigation dvd, you can then play mp3's and dvds..

I was skeptical at first, but if the dealer said it...that makes me wonder if theres a better way to play dvds.

I havent seen anything out there that states a chip replacement in the stock dvd drive will perform as you suggest (or the dealer suggests)... and im sure we'd of seen it by now... now with this being said...

exactly how far fetched would it really be to have a chip that plays dvd movies and mp3's ... the drive is "probably" generic sold from a manufacture directly to nissan and is used elsewhere... especially overseas they allow video.

time to dig into my electronic bag of tricks and try to find out more info...

ppp

The "Drive" contains the brain of the navigation system. One cannot 'chip' something that has no DVD decoder unless the whole motherboard is redesigned, code reprogrammed and the drive replaced. True, a Nissan electrical engineer might be able to perform that task, but not for average Joe like you and me.

I was thinking about the whole video input, DVD player concept for awhile. Then I decided it's a waste of money. I'd rather buy a $200 portable do-it-all DVD player with a 8" screen and leave it in the glove box. Supposedly these new portable DVD players will play everything from DVD/DVD-R/SVCD/MP3/Divx/XVid/WMV/Built in Games/TV Tuner, and some even has a harddrive.

Have you talked to the dealer lately or made an appointment to get it done? How much did he say he would charge you for labor and parts?

True, he has nothing to gain, including knowledge of how things work. Its not that he is making it up, he is ignorant to tell you that the CHIP is really a MODULE and we already know about this

Well, if a dealership did this mod for you, it would be under warranty correct? Also, there are a few types of modules out there right?
