Glove Box mounting brainstorm
So I just received my Innovatek DVD player and see how remarkably small the unit is. I was sitting in the car and trying to figure out where to mount it, and came up with 3 locations with varying levels of difficulty.
But the one I want to discuss here is mounting it in the glove box. If you guys with 05's (don't know if it is identical to 03-04's) open your glove box, you will see that the glove box cubby moves with the glove box (part of the door). and when it closes, the cubby most likely touches the plastic "ceiling" of the glove box compartment.
My question to you guys is, what is directly above the plastic ceiling of the glove box compartment? I know the DVD ROM for the factory NAV is up there, but is there anything vital DIRECTLY on top of this plastic peice?
I am thinking of mounting the DVD player to the plastic ceiling of the glove box compartment, and dremelling out the width of the dvd player from the glove box door cubby so that you can close the glove box door and not hit the dvd player.
However, if there is something vital directly on top of the plastic in the compartment, that would prove to be difficult. I have not taken the dash apart yet, and was hopeing that someone here could enlighten me (that has taken that apart). Can that plastic compartment ceiling be removed (so that I could mount the dvd player to it and then reinstall)?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Its solid something right behind...not hollow and you will feel that if you try tapping on it. I am in the same dilemma as you and as of now my glove box acts like a shelf WHEN I take out the DVD player to watch a movie...
I think PearlCoupe is the only member on this forum with one in his glovebox...but even he isn't to sure of how it was done since it was custom...maybe he can take a real close look and let us know?

Well, I was searching for the cabin filter replacement instructions (with pictures) to see what is behind it, and the only thing that I can tell that is behind it is the glove box light and the passenger side Airbag deployment "thing". I think that if you stragically place the screws in the plastic (with the head of the screw on top of the plastic, and the lock nut on the underside, where you can see it), the dvd player would fit. The only other thing I would be worried about is if the dvd player mounted there would be pushed back far enough to be able to close the glove box. I am pretty sure it will fit though.
I guess the real leap of faith is going to be cutting the glove box cubby on the door, to make the dvd fit with the door closed. Have you figured out how to remove the door of the glove box without screwing up the cable system in there? Is it easy?
I should be receiving my tvandnav2go converter this week, so this weekend will be go time on the install. after I see what is behind the plastic on my 05 (the pics I saw were from an 03 or 04), and all is clear, I think I am just going to go for it. I do have to figure out how to get the door off the compartment so that i can dremel out enough clearance for the player to fit in there while the door is closed. I might mount the player to one side and leave room for another din sized unit for future expansion.
Any insight anyone else can provide would be much appreciated.
PearlCoupe, can you provide any pics of the finished product in your glovebox to give me some ideas about placement?

Ahh, i see how pearlcoupeg35 mounted his unit. I did this type of install in my M3. All the stereo shop did was dremel out the back of the cubby hole and mounted the dvd player pushed back far enough to close the door. I guess, there isn't that much of a clearance issue when closing the door with the dvd player sticking out the rear. I guess theonly thing I would worry about would be the mount angle, the stability of the door itself, and the possibility of the dvd skipping under normal driving conditions.
I was hopeing that he mounted it to the top of the glove compartment as I am suggesting. Perhaps I will be the firs then. The only modifications I am really doing could potentially screw up the glove compartment door. So replacing that should be too bad if I screw up.
Like I said, should i find no clearance issues with the top of the glove compartment, I guess I will just go for it and pray for the best. I will post pics once it is installed to give others like us the option.

Please keep this moving and update us on your progress. I like the thinking and hope to go there soon. Another one I was thinking was how about relocating stock DVD map drive so that two drives would go side by side. I'm tired now and going off memory, but from memory it seems as though they'd fit.

That's an interesting thought. I have no idea what is behind the plastic cover that surrounds the dvd rom. Has anyone taken that cover off? can the DVD rom be dismounted, pushed to one side, and remounted? If anyone has pics of this cover off (and/or measurements of the cubby relative to the dvd rom) that would be sweet.
Thanks for the suggestion...

Keep us posted, but I still think its solid behind the cover you are talking about...meaning not much room to do what you want to do. Pearcoupes way might be the "only" way for glove box mounting...right now, if I drop my Fuma (same size as the innovatek) and slide it all the way to the back, I only need a 1/4 inch more until I can close the glove box. I mean Im soooooooooo close the latch actually touches the door, but not enough to actually "latch".
Let us know, and include pics, thanks!

Well, I was waaaaay off on thinking that it would fit mounted to the ceiling of the glove compartment. They ceiling isn't deep enough.
I ended up installing it just as PearlCoupeG35 did in the lower glove box.
I will take pics later and post them. I probably dremelled out the glove box for about 2 hours before I finally got it to fit right. What a pain in the butt.
I also installed the TVandNav2go unit (for the 2005 G35) and the screen works with vertical hold. There are some artifacts however, and am I waiting to hear back from Dominic about the issue. I hope I didn't forget somehting, as taking the console apart is something I am not looking forward to...

Please take pictures without the unit in the glove box so I can get started on mine!!!! I want to see how it looks like after it was dremeled out.
Thanks Superman! (I feel kind of wierd saying that hahaha, but yea)
And what do you mean that the screen works with a "vertical hold"?

1) Yes I can take pictures of the unit out of the box so that you can get started on yours. However, I don't know if I will take the glove box out again, which is really what you are looking for. I can, however, mark a picture of what needs to be dremmeled out if you send me one. I will also make a quick photoshop drawing of what should be dremmeled (if I get some time here)
But just so you know... You need to both dremmel out the lower glove box cubby, AND the compartment that the cubby is in.
2) What I meant by the "vertical hold" comment is that many of the folks (including yourself) that went with the PAC video unit complained that the screen kept rolling. I just meant that my screen does not roll.
Also, as an update to the TVandNav2go unit. I forgot to connect the ground and shield wires, and have been told that by connected those, the artifacts will disappear. So I am going to try that tonight. If I get time, I will take teh glove box out and show you what needs to be dremmeled out. be forewarned...the dremel gets away from you reeeeeeeally easily.

Superman, you rock! I've used the dremel before and know exactly what you mean about it having a brain of its own. In terms of the vertical hold, I thought so. I just wasn't sure why you mentioned it again since the problem was solved. And about the grounding thing...I could've told you that! The shield does make a difference to since it helps dissipate and noise between the signal wires. Grounding video components is always a must or else you can get rolling screens, screens with skewed corners, black random lines, etc...also a tip when grounding, NISSAN grounds the chasis of the vehicle, so try using any screw around the head unit area, or you can always tap into a negative signal and see how that works out for you.

All I found around the head unit was screws going into plastic. I didn't see any screws into metal. Do you have any in mind?
I was thinking of grounding it to either:
1) RGB ground (between the NAV-DVD-ROM and Screen)
2) Negative of the Cigarette Lighter (where I grounded both the DVD player and the Converter unit)
What have you found to be the best ground?
EDIT: Just talked to Dominic and he says that as strange as it sounds, it is better to ground to the RGB ground rather than chassis even though ground is technically ground.

Gee Im Fast....*sigh* taking the glove box out was just for you. I hope it helps you and anyone else that wants to install the dvd player in the lower glove box. I marked up the pictures to hopefully guide you to do a better job than I did.
Let me know if you have any questions...

Pic 2: Inside/front of compartment
