HEEELLP MEE DVD player shuts off!!
OK guys, so I picked up a digital wheelz xenarc 700v screen and an Innovatek FD-7. I have the screen and DVD player both tapped to the cig. lighter on the passenger side. I used the radio shack wire taps to wire them. The mobile DVD player has many options for wiring. It comes w/ a cig lighter adapter to use, it also comes w/ a hard wiring kit and a regular in home adapter. The option I chose was the hard wire kit, obviously. The hard wire kit includes 4 wires...
1. red - Backup 12V
2. black - ground
3. yellow ACC 12V (assume its for the 'accessory' position when the key isnt turned completely)
4. blue - remote 12V
the yellow and blue wire run together, and the black and red run together with a large fuse inline on the red wire. I can again turn the dvd player on using the power button or remote, but again after 10-15 sec, it majically shuts off. The dvd player fits very snugly in to the upper glove cubby, i even removed it and tried but still the same thing.
Here's my problem: When the car starts, I turn on the dvd player. The DVD player loads the menu and plays the movie etc and works fine. After about 10-15 sec the power simply shuts off, no warning or anything. Shortly thereafter, the Xenarc screen senses no input and shuts off a few secs after that.
I tapped the cigarette lighter with the red/black wire. I left the yellow wire untouched (as I will never be watching dvd's with the car off or in accessory) and the blue I ran a remote wire from my PAC audio unit. I thought maybe the yellow wire needs to be used as the red said (backup 12V), so i removed the red wire and instead used the yellow (ACC 12V). This time no power NOTHING, DVD player wouldnt even turn on. So i thought maybe I need to use a different cig. lighter and I moved the red BACKUP 12V over to the driver side. I then tapped that cig. lighter wire and the SAME problem, dvd player turns on for 10-15 sec then just shuts off. PLEEEASE HELP!! I have also read that I should NOT use the cig. lighter as a ground and tried a generic grounding point, but the screen would still shut off aft er 10-15 sec. I have searched online and asked many people, but STILL cannot figure this out. My only other options are:
1. try another video input device (from the house, which I know WONT shut off)
2. Try and use the cig lighter it came w/ as well and cut off cig. lighter head and wire using that, inserting an inline fuse on the red/12v wire.
I would PREFER to use existing wiring as its easier, but please gimme your input on what the problem could be!!

Usually with car electronics you need a constant 12V AND a switched 12V.
First off, do you have ANY means of testing voltage on a wire? A meter is preferred, but even a 12V test light is better than nothing for this issue.
BTW, is your DVD player mounted horizontally or vertically?

el_duderino,
I did notice the 2 'power' wires, red being 'backup 12v' and the yellow being the 'ACC 12V', but I assumed the yellow wire was for having auxillary power while the key was in the accessory position (in case you wanted to watch dvd's while the car was off). Howver there are other devices I have wired which only had a positive/ground wire without a switched 12V supply (my xenarc screen currently has only a positive fused wire and a ground wire). Amps I wired in previous cars had a positive/ground and remote wire, not sure if remote would be the switched 12v...
Anywayz I can try and obtain a voltmeter, but what exactly would i need to test?? The cig. lighter wire or the wire from the dvd player?? The player is mounted horizontally, its basically a single DIN unit sitting snug in the upper glove box.

Easy fix, jumper your red and yellow together and it will go away. Paypal me my $9.99 plus tax no later then midnight Pacific time.
The blue can be left hanging as you don't need to use it.

It will work. Im not messing with you. Go out and try it now and come back and post after you see that it works.
P.S. I am the Electrical Engineer behind SoCal HookUpz..you have nothing to fear.

Well, before you ever connect another wire, you should buy an effing voltmeter.
What they're telling you is that both wires need power. I suspect that by giving the yellow constant power wire a switched signal, you may lose your place on the DVD when the key is turned off and you'll have to start every time.
As far as you deciding how car electronics are supposed to work because you've looked at your in-car pc stuff, don't draw conclusions off of insufficent data and non-representative samples. That stuff ain't regular car electronics either : )

HOWEVER, if you manually turn off the DVD player BEFORE turning off the car, it will remember where its at the next time you power on
By jumpering, I mean twist tie them at one end or solder them, then wire tap one or both of them. It does not matter. The point is they BOTH need 12V.
By the way, how did you even determine the polarity of the CIG lighter wires without a voltmeter? And please don't hurt my ears by saying "I tested it till it wokred"
